If the phone is no longer supported, the only way to get an up-to-date version of Android is to use a custom ROM (aka firmware).

I've just bought a new phone, but I used Lineage OS on my old Samsung Galaxy S2. It was brilliant.

Other popular custom ROMs are available, but I haven't tried them myself. Have a google to see what other people are using on your particular model of phone.

Flashing a new ROM isn't completely straightforward, but again there are lots of guides online.

Personally it seems quite daunting but it will give you a guide to what is involved.

Just for info ... I put LineageOS on SWMBO's old Nexus 7 (original version) - it gave it a new lease of life, in that it is actually usable now. (We mainly use it as an Internet radio player for the bathroom).

You'll only be able to update to Android 7 (Nougat) although it will be LineageOS as the Moto G 2nd Gen won't support anything past that.
