    Ok just an update
Finally after the hustle and bustle of Christmas/New Year and being ill, I have booked the holiday.

    Going 06/08 to 27/8 yay

Manchester/Newark/SanFrancisco/Auckland for £2240 with United Airlines

A lot of hours in the sky and a few hours on layover but hayho that's the adventure

EsTA and NZeTA to get later

I do have a few concerns though if anyone can point the way

There is nowhere on the UA site for passports to add on - googled and it seems you give them to check in

I'm not sure if the bags will go all the way or we have to get them at Newark & San Francisco and go through customs again - googled it and got myself in a panic  I'm just going to ask when we get to Manchester, saves me over thinking.

You'll need to collect your bags at Newark and then take them to bag drop. From then, the next time that you'll see them is when you arrive in AKL.
Have a great time in NZ and well done on getting such a cost effective fare.

You'll also need to get a US Esta for the three of you, even though you're only transiting through.
You can save a few NZ$ by applying via the NZ Govt App.

PLEASE be very careful when applying for your ESTAs. There are so many dodgy sites which will charge you for something you can you do yourself. This is the official site, but don't take my word for it, check for yourself:)

Applying for the NZeTA through the official app (I used IoS) is straightforward. Be careful @ the photo stage though. It took mine before I was ready, so is at a strange angle. They granted the visa anyway and thankfully photo doesn't appear on the visa.

I'm visiting for the 1st time next month and really looking forward to it.

MTC - thanks for the info re the bags - puts my mind at rest knowing thats what will happen

Also thanks MTC & badger for the heads up regarding the EsTA and NZeTA

I have seen news reports re scam sites etc on here so will be very wary on what I click on - I'll just click on your links for both when I come to apply
Wasn't planning on applying yet though

Knowing my luck I'll get a wonky pic as well

    and Badger Enjoy your trip
