My car hit by van who then drove off

Hello
My wife was driving our 6 month old car today when a van pulled out on her and damaged front wing and bumper
Said white van then failed to stop and drove off
No witnesses and no dash cam sadly
As wife can't remember the vans plate , thinking the only option I have is to pay for repairs myself and not go through insurance ?
Any advice greatly appreciated
Will be fitting a dash cam ...
Thanks

It is usual with most insurers that you notify them of any accidents, whether or not you intend claiming. The van driver committed an offence by leaving the scene of an accident, so you may wish to report this to the police, although without a reg plate, doubtful if they can or will do anything

If you have comprehensive cover then you do have the option of claiming on your insurance. It will mean paying your excess and losing some of your no claims bonus, unless your insurer is one of the small number that will waive these things if you are hit by an untraced driver (as opposed to an uninsured driver), so it may not be cost effective if the damage is relatively minor.

Going to get a quote tomorrow ( know someone who owns a body shop)
I do have comp insurance so could claim but don't really want the hassle however if its expensive will have to claim
I have not reported the accident to insurance or police yet as depends on cost of repair before I commit
Not sure regarding timescales that I have to inform police or insurance if I do claim ??
As no registration details known can't see what the police could do anyway
    There's some horrible people about

You're not a driver yourself then.

My wife and I share the car

Its my policy , and my wife who was driving is named driver

Therefore my wife will have to report accident to police as she is the driver ?

have checked XS on policy and only £100 and also protected NCB

I recon the damage will be approx £1000

So recon it will be a insurance job
    regards

No businesses close by with cctv that they would have driven past?

Sometimes, they'll happily help. Sometimes they'll only disclose to the police.
