Dishwasher from Currys not working after just 14 months

Looking for some advice please.

I purchased a dishwasher via the internet from Currys in July 2018. In Septermber this year, 14 months after purchase, it now doesn't work properly - stopping part way through a cycle. The dishwasher is for my house, and probably gets used once every other day or once every 3rd day.

I contacted Currys via email, acknowledged that it was outside the 1 year guarantee period, but asked them if they would repair or replace it at their cost - as surely a dishwasher should last longer than 14 months.

They responded with the following 'in order that I may consider your request for the product to be repaired out of guarantee, I would request that you supply a diagnostic report from an authorised service agent. The report must state the nature of the fault, the likely cause, and details of the diagnostic processes used. It should also state the estimated cost of repair and whether the fault is considered to be caused by an inherent manufacturing defect. We will reimburse any out of pocket expense that you might incur in obtaining this report if proven that it is a manufacturing defect.'

Is this right then? And are they only obliged to repair/replace if there is a manufacturing defect?

If it's not a manufacturing defect, then it must be wear and tear - we have not mis-treated the dishwasher, and as stated earlier in the post it doesn't get used every day. Surely it should be expected to have a working life of more than 14 months?

Look forward to any advice you may have to offer relating to this.

Thanks,

Dempsey.

Yes, they are quite correct. Legally, after the first 6 months the onus is on you to prove the fault points to an inherent manufacturing issue. You do this, as they suggest, by paying for an engineer's report to diagnose the issue, but bear in mind the cost of such a report should be refunded if it goes in your favour.

Sounds like the correct advice has being given

The most common problem if dishwashers stop working is the sump and pump jam with grease, lift filter and scoop out as mush water as possible and then pour 2 kettles of boiling water down and switch dishwasher on to hot wash and see if this works to clear the machine
