Rental deposit was protected but protection "ended" at random date

I'm in Northern Ireland. Our lease ended around 4 weeks ago, and since then we've been in a battle of mostly ignored emails with the agents to get the deposit returned. During this process, we discovered that while our deposit had been protected by TDS Northern Ireland, that deposit had "ended" on a seemingly random date.

This is the exact wording from TDS Northern Ireland:
"I can confirm that this deposit protection ended back on [date]. If the tenancy was continuing your agent/landlord should have renewed or continued the protection and I can advise that you refer back to your agent/landlord and ask them to protect the deposit again."

As I said, this date is in no way connected to our tenancy (it's 1 year 2 months since it started). I've never heard of this before. How would a deposit protection "end"?

I'm aware this could potentially be too NI specific for most to help out but if anyone has any experience of anything similar it would be great to hear your thoughts.

Why did it end - no-one could tell you. Administrative error would probably be the most common reason

Normally when a deposit is protected the tenant gets notified and therefore any subsequent ending or withdrawal of deposit can't happen without notifying the tenant.

Have you not had any contact?

No, we've had no communication or documentation from TDS NI at any point (and yes I'm aware we should have dealt with this fact much sooner!)

You are right that few here, myself included, are familiar with the NI rules.

However I imagine they are similar to England....

In Eng, the deposit must be placed in a scheme and remain protected throughout the tenancy. If not, the tenant can claim a penalty.

Assuming NI is the same, first check it was not moved to a different scheme (if there's more than one in NI).

Then point out to the landlord/agent that if you don't receive your deposit back in full wihing 5 days, you will claim the penalty. That is likely to get a reaction!

At least one of the 3 schemes has had admin mess ups recently. I wouldn't be surprised if the letter was sent in error.
