You will need a working audio input on the TV, since the 15pin D-SUB VGA connector is video only.
in any case I wouldn't pay £250 to repair an old TV. Either buy a new one for a little bit more or a second hand one cheaper.0 -
That was my opinion as he wanted £50 each way to collect and return the TV and £150 to repair it at his workshop. I said No and have been considering buying a new smart TV for not much more than that but being a cheapskate I wondered if I could avoid the expense of a new TV by buying the adaptor which is about £5.0

That is the going rate for the Firestick and has been for a long while.
Amazon usually have special offers on them from time to time so keep an eye on the website.0 -
Just use the laptop he can get all he needs on there.
Theres lots of streaming sites all free.1 -
for laptop its completely useless and he can stream whatever he wants to via laptop and internet but if you want to connect Amazon fire stick with your TV that will be best option which improves your streaming and you can also use VPN for streaming by connecting to Amazon or any other device.0

My son is at Uni - he doesn't have a TV with him but he has his laptop. Would a firestick be useful for him - I don't know exactly what it is for. He does have good wifi.
Amazon have them on sale for £29.99 and I don't know if this is a good price.
Many thanks

I have a sprog at Uni, they went there to Study not to waste time watching TV, far too many distractions as it is with social media and all the other diversions. They can watch TV on Laptop if they have time, I would not buy them a TV for use with their Firestick as it will distract them beause it can be on while they study, while a laptop is more likely to be being used for research etc.
Mine has a netflix subscription they got free from their mobile provider but they hardly use it, even when in study avoidance mode.
Firesticks were £19.99 on black friday but having used one I far prefer Roku which costs more but does not make you go via Amazon to get to your apps, I hate that about Amazon and would not buy one because of it.
I would buy him something to help him organise his life so he can get better results. https://gettingthingsdone.com/
