Electricity poles in garden and nearby

We've seen a fantastic house that we're keen to make an offer on. However, I'm concerned about electricity poles in the garden and a pylon nearby.

There are three wooden poles in the garden. Two of these are about 25m from the house and one much further away (the garden is 3 acres so plenty of space). There is also a pylon which is a few hundred metres away on a farmer's land. There are overhead cables across the garden.

I don't find any of this too much of an eyesore and, if I wasn't looking with a buyer's eye, might not even have noticed them. But are they likely to put off future buyers and is there anything in the suggestion that they may be connected with health problems or is that nonsense?

Is there anyway that cables overhead can instead be run underground?

All pretty normal in rural locations. Yes, they might put off somebody, but all sorts of things will put off some people. No, of course they don't cause health problems.

Yes, they can be run underground, but they tend not to be because that's much more expensive.

The electricity won't run them under ground just because you think they are an eyesore.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

    Oh, they will.

But you really won't like the bill for doing so.

Will they put buyers off? Perhaps some. Not all.
Will you get a very small annual income for them? Yes!
  • What would put me off is if the poles were not there and therefore mains electricity wasn't either.

Sounds a lovely property...and fabulous space around it...i'd be tempted to offer

you've got to remember that there are very few properties that would absolutely appeal to everyone...you'll have a target market when you come to sell that wont include all...but realistically how many properties tick every box with absolutely no compromise.

You should be thinking of staying there for years so buy it, it sounds like it has good garden.

If may put some buyers off yes, but I wouldn't discount it just because some buyers may not like it when I do decide to sell it in 5,10 or 15 years time. There will be buyers now who wouldn't offer - make your appropriate offer and go from there.
  • Thank you, all.

The cables don't cause health problems anyway, but you're almost suggesting that, even if they did, they would somehow be safer if you couldn't see them...
  • Not suggesting that at all. My question about running cables underground relates only to aesthetics.

If you have one of these you can get the wires hidden.

Or, unless you're some kind of masochist who wants to get fit but hates gyms...

Digging a suitable trench will certainly massively reduce the bill from the power firm, but they'll still charge like a wounded rhino for laying the conductors and doing the connections.
