benefits are supposed to be a safety net of last resort, not a alternative way of life worth choosing.

    exactly!!!!!

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Its one of the hard problems of benefits, if a benefit system works as a safety net then it has to provide a basic level of living. If it does provide a basic level of living why work in a lousy job for that same standard of living.

A lot of people would like decent jobs.

Providing massive cash to WASPI women is not helping this is it? Those on benefits would loose only those who are relatively well off would be quids in? Why should we give to them because they have chosen to forget?

I think the penny is finally starting to drop - ie, that only 'richer' women would benefit from this bribe, as those genuinely in need would be no better off after paying tax and losing their means tested benefits.

The richer women would normally vote conservative. So labour will have won a certain amount of votes from WASPI women who will do anything to get this money that they think they are entitled to. Labour need to tell us where it is coming from.

Unemployment benefit is a very basic level of living. If you watch any of the 'on benefits and rich' programmes they are always on 'disability' benefits. If I was in charge of the country disability payments would be by reimbursement of receipts. ie you need a wheelchair. We agree. Buy one and send us the bill. Hardship scheme for the penniless would be needed. There was a thread on the disability section. What do you spend your disability benefits on? Football season ticket, first class air travel, the grandchildren etc etc Unbelievable.

The BBC host asked Mr Corbyn nine times how he plans to find the money to compensate the WASPI women.
Instead of answering the question, the Labour leader said he wanted to “explain why” the WASPI women should be compensated.
Mr Neil then became visibly frustrated as Mr Corbyn repeatedly dodged the question but the Labour leader eventually admitted his government would borrow the money.

He said: “What we’re saying is we will do it, we are paying for it from Government reserves and if necessary, because it’s not all going to be paid in one year, we will have to borrow in the long term.”
The 'BBC host' was Andrew Neil.

Does it give everyone a warm, fuzzy feeling to know that Labour are going to borrow money to pay 3.8 million women because of something that was in the public domain almost 25 years ago?
Borrow money to pay a lot of women who don't all need the money.

;) To be fair, the money will be recouped via income taxes anyway so anyone who find herself with £30k payout would have to pay the higher rate tax.; ;)

Or have lots of children. When I went to the DWP office to cancel my late sister's disability benefits (see, she really had been ill) I was initially horrified at the number of fag ends I had to wade through to get to the front door. On benefits, moaning about being skint, but able to afford to spend £300 per month on cigarettes? Sorry, but just doesn't wash with me.

Then I had to wait to speak to an advisor, as there was a gaggle of young mums with pushchairs/toddlers ahead of me. All were clamouring for (more) money, and one in particular was kicking off big time because she HAD to get her money early, as she was 'off to ffing Spain on ffing holiday tomorrow and what did they expect her to do for ffing spends'.

I have no objection to those in need being awarded benefits at a level that supports a reasonable lifestyle, but fags, foreign holidays, sky tv ? No. They have to be worked for.

Or removal of benefits. But we've covered this...
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries

Fred - i really do hope you are trolling

Disability benefits do not exist to allow the purchase of wheelchairs. They exist to allow those unable to work a basic standard of living because they cannot otherwise work. What are you supposed to do if you cannot work? I think the general public is generally supportive of the idea of ensuring that those unable to work are looked after by society.

The general public is clearly not supportive of an unlimited playing of the system. the problem for governments is to ensure that the right people get help and that those people are allowed to keep their dignity in the process. There are people of course looking to game the system / to avoid work / to do nothing in return for as much as possible - the problem is how you preserve dignity for those who are not the gamers.
