    No have never done this
  • Is it really worth the risk of getting blocked by the banks with lasting unpleasant results by trying to fool them in ways such as this?

    In short, don't do it.

Referral link T&C's will all state that its for new customers switching banks. So you wouldn't qualify as you aren't a new customer you're just an old customer opening a new account.

It's not all. In fact I can only think of one, TSB.

Others lately are for just switching (new or existing customers) - Nationwide, Santander.

However I suggest you read the terms, as all the ones I've seen exclude self referring.

Not quite self referral, but each holder of a Nationwide joint account can refer the other for a switch. Each partner will get both the referrer and the referee bonus, if I remember correctly.

I had assumed OP was talking purely about refer a friend bonuses (TSB, Nationwide) as opposed to more generic switching offers for new and existing customers. Fully agree that reading the T&Cs is key though.
  • Thanks all. It was more out of interest as I heard someone else mention about it and thought it didn't sound right. So really best just to do it with partner so we both get the bonus.

    So did I.

You think Nationwide switch referral is not for existing customers?

Or you think Santander wasn't a referral scheme?

In fact now I think about it, even TSB existing customers can benefit, too.

No, I think the Nationwide (and TSB) switch referral is for existing customers (ie the referrer), but I don't think I can get my own referral link, open a new account as myself and switch in one of my other accounts and then receive 2 x £100 which is what OP asked.

Not sure what the Santander referral scheme was (not a bank I have used a switch offer for yet). But if it was similar to the current Natwest/RBS or Barclays offer where existing customers can switch in one of their other accounts and get £150 of double rewards then no, I wouldn't consider this a "referral offer" as no one is referring me to the bank. I would consider it a switching bonus for new and existing customers.

Earlier in the year, it had crossed my mind to put the competence of TSB's referral bonus / related systems to the test, although not in the obvious way that the OP is proposing. It was potentially a bit "grey area" so ultimately decided against it.

As a rule, I do always abide by the T&C/small print of offers/promotions, which itself often has some creative wiggle room.
