Thames Water

6 years ago my boyfriend and I rented a flat, he worked out the rent, electricity, council tax and water bill and we shared it 50/50.
Every payday I transferred my share to him.
2 years ago, he started abusing me, he forced me to give him my money and cash card, he lost his job, he sold my goods and told me never to open the mail box or I’ll be sorry.
I eventually had the courage to talk to someone, I called the police, packed my belonging and left.
I still jump if someone stands behind me but I was getting better until a red letter from Thames Water arrived at my parents address, I called TW told them everything, but they say I am liable for the entire bill.
2 years ago unbeknown to me he changed the account into my name but used his own bank details to set it up.
Thames Water say I am liable for the entire amount although I have bank statements referenced “house bills”
It makes sense now why I couldn’t pass the reference checks for phones etc even though I had savings.
I maybe paranoid but he may have taken out payday loans in my name also.
Am I liable to pay Thames Water or these other companies if any.
I plan to get my full credit history so I know what I’m dealing with.
If anyone can tell me what else I can do I would appreciated it.

If the bill is in your name, I doubt there is anything you can do about it. Although if he put it in your name without your knowledge, perhaps it could be reported to Action Fraud?

I think this question may be better dealt with on the Debt-Free Wannabe board.

There is a separate forum for Water bills. That said however this issue is more suited to be posted in the forum about debts.

Whilst I don't doubt your version of events is accurate, the problem is that TW just can't take your word over that of your boyfriend.

Can you prove you moved out 2 years ago?

TW may have recorded the phone call changing the name on the account - assuming it wasn't put in writing.

I am afraid you are going to have to take legal advice on this matter.

Contact Thames Water and ask them to produce evidence that you entered into a contract with them. They should be able to provide a copy of a contract, or a recording of a telephone call.

If they cannot show that you entered into any contract, then ask them to cancel the outstanding bills and track down the real account holder.

You could call Action Fraud, and get a crime number, to quote to Thames Water.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
