My 13 yr old son is going to the USA with a school ski
trip. I don't want him to take loads of cash. Does any know the best way for him to take money securely. I'm thinking of some kind of card that he can use when over there?
Any guidance greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I had a look at the Nationwide card mentioned but I am unable to find costs for using it to take out Dollars or to pay for things in Dollars. Perhaps look into a card like the Starling card, there is no fee and its a low exchange rate.0

You might want to look at the Caxton FX card loaded in US Dollars as well
You'll have to take it out in your name - but he can be an additional card holder for a £5 fee.
https://www.caxtonfx.com/
You can easily load funds as required.0 -
There are no costs for using the FlexOne debit card overseas. The account pays 1% interest.scalextric wrote: »I had a look at the Nationwide card mentioned but I am unable to find costs for using it to take out Dollars or to pay for things in Dollars. Forget about Starling Bank for anyone under 16, and Caxton card involves costs, likely leftover $ funds, and would not be in the child's name which is sometimes checked in USA.
The FlexOne account with debit card is the best travel solution for ages 11-18+.Evolution, not revolution0 -
Many thanks- I’m going for the nationwide one - it’ll be in his name and I can manage it online too Should he needs more cash when away.0

Has the school said what their policy on spending money is?0

Remember that ATMs in the USA almost always charge a modest user fee for withdrawing cash, and Nationwide (or any other bank) has no control over that.
Regular travellers to America might give a more up to date picture.
The Wells Fargo holes in the wall that I used in San Francisco took $4 per transaction - so it was better to take one larger amount than a few smaller ones.0 -

There is cashback in some shops, in addition to credit union ATMs that charge US$1 to US$1.50.
Barclays Bank VISA debit cards can be used at Bank Of America ATM for no fees other than the 2.75% forex charge. Especially useful when you might need just a small amount of cash every now and again.0
