How much weight a bedroom can hold (HELP!)

Options
Hi I'm kind of OCD about this, I move into my first rented property its a 1980's 2 bed house and I brought this bed that looked strong with draws at the side.

After receiving it and assembling it, I'm worried it may be too heavy for the bedroom floor, I've not even assembled the draws because they're at least weighing in at 14kg (from the box notes).

The bed is a king size supposedly 90kgs, and I've tried to use a scale and found each leg either ways 20kg or 30kg and there are 8 legs. I'm around 70 ish kg. Its the monet fabric bed frame from dunlem.

Has anyone had a really heavy bed like this and will the floor be ok?, I'm used to the standard divan type beds, but they seem to break often.

Thank you for all the advice and help too!

I think you may have a typo here.
The legs of your bed will NOT ever weigh 20 to 30 kg each !!
    2 to 3 kg possibly.
Your bedroom floor will be strong enough.
    Stop worrying............

Just don't have a night of passion with someone well built and you will be fine.;)

Actually you could have a threesome and the floor will hold up just fine.:D

You sure about those weights OP?
A 30kg leg would be a piece of oak, roughly 6 inches square, and 4 feet long.
Most people would find it fairly heavy to pick up.

The floor's going to be strong enough for most normal furniture. I've got several large bookcases full of books on a suspended floor here. They're heavy.
  • I don't think you're the first person to worry about this. According to this link http://bedroom-workshop.com/workshop-floorloading/0workshop-floorloading.html , the relevant British Standard is BS6399-1, 1996. It says that domestic floors should be able to support about 150kg per square metre, and point loads of 140kg.

If you're worried that the floor is a bit substandard, you could put some squares of cheap thick chipboard under each foot, maybe 150mm x 150mm x 15mm, but that's unlikely to be needed.

I've found those figures of 20kg and 30kg by placing some standard scales (ones used to weight at home) on three of the legs.

But I can just about lift the bed and keep my fingers under the large one of the legs without my fingers being crushed (yes, it's quite unsafe to do)

@WobblyDog, I've had a look at those before posting trying to find the ones before 1980, I was gonna try and return the bed frame to give me some peace of mind, but it goes against the manufactures policy of being opened and used.

There's your error. You cannot calculate the weight of a bed or its legs by putting three of its eight legs on scales.

Unless you're planning to put four pallets full of bricks in the centre of the room surrounded by 4 pianos and then stand an elephant on top I don't think you need to worry.
