grant of letters of administration

Hi all,
Brother in law has recently passed away without leaving a will. He has an only son that will inherit everything, (divorced 15+ years ago).
No inheritance tax to worry about as the estate will be worth about £70k, (mainly a small property).
I understand from various websites that we need to get a "grant of letters of administration", but I can't find out how this is done, what it should actually contain, and who to give it to?
Any help greatly appreciated..
Many thanks

You can find most of the forms here:
https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/inheritance-tax-forms
But since there was no will you will need form PA1A rather than PA1P:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/form-pa1a-apply-for-probate-deceased-did-not-leave-a-will
So probably form IHT205 and PA1A, you might need 1 or 2 others, no doubt someone will be along to clarify that.0 -
To add to the above helpful answer, this may also be useful reading matter: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/family/death-and-wills/dealing-with-the-financial-affairs-of-someone-who-has-died/0
