Wii gets stuck at choose language screen

I’ve bought a used Wii.
Before I return it I wondered if I could resolve the problem of it being stuck at the choose language screen.
Nintendo say the sensor bar may not be working. It is - the infra red lights show up on an iPad screen as they tell you to look.
The remote is synced to the box correctly.
Any ideas?
