Single mum - struggling financially

Hi guys,
I’ll get right to it. I left my part time job last month because of anxiety caused by a previous relationship. I was gradually becoming more stressed and unable to sleep which started the anxiety loop. Before this I have worked all my life since I was 16.

I set up a business from home only a few weeks ago but it’s very slow as it’s only started so my income for that is currently zero.

My mortgage, loan, and other bills are due to come out at the end of this month and I won’t have enough to cover it and most of my arranged overdraft is being used.

I get tax credits and child benefit but they aren’t enough.

I’ve been looking for online jobs and applying so I can do the business as well as get some income while I’m working at home but it’s so competitive, it’s hard to get started.

I won’t be able to cover my bills at the end of the month and I haven’t even thought about Christmas.

Needless to say the kids father doesn’t pay. It’s a solicitor battle so I won’t be getting money any time soon.

I would work night and day for income, I don’t expect it to be handed to me but my anxiety complicates my situation.

What can I do?
Does anyone know of any work?
Trying to stay well away from payday loans if I can help it.
Any ideas?

Thank you x

Why haven't you asked the Child Maintenance Service to help you get child maintenance?
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

  • We share care between us. I was told that unless I have the children more than he does, then I can’t claim it. I’m fighting for spousal maintenance currently.

Very rare to get spousal maintenance in this day and age and your ex would need to earning a very decent wage for this to payable.

He was earning £50k, now maybe £30k.

It’s complicated as we build up a successful business and he’s been taking both salaries.

I am assuming you have had legal advice? If you are both directors never thought that could be done. But you never stop learning.

But as a general point its rare now a days and you only tend to see it in the more wealthy rather than run of mill cases of divorce. There would also have to be a massive difference in the income you are capable of earning if you can earn at all unless there is a disability or getting towards pension age. A clean break order is often used so no spousal maintenance.

    But good luck with it.

Spousal maintenance and child support are different.

You need to speak to the cms about child maintenance. How shared is the shared care?

  • As mentioned on your other thread you will find HMRC will punish you for being a home owner. They really dont like us what so ever. They dont help people in need to assist in paying the mortgage, but will happily assist in paying rent and council tax.

You've not mentioned what income you had previous to leaving the job/s. this would help with the claim.

Have you spoke to HMRC and mentioned to them about your struggles and you want to ensure your claim details are correct? they should tell you exact what you should be getting until april 2020 under your current situation with any earnings to date.

Getting help with rent and council tax has not nothing to do with HMRC. It’s the DWP and/or local authorities.

OP, you may want to get a benefits check at an advice agency to see if you would be better off on Universal Credit rather than Tax Credits. However if it is your intention to be gainfully self employed then UC may not be for you because it is difficult for the self employed. Claiming UC would end your Tax Credits.

If you are looking for employment you may qualify for new style JSA which can be paid for 6 months but this will depend on your NI record between April 2016 and March 2018.
