iPad Black Friday

Options
As I mentioned sometime back I want to buy an iPad Pro, to replace my old iPad Air which is almost out of space.
I’ve been doing some research today and am coming to the opinion that refurbished or an older version maybe the way to go. In particular I’m seeing a number named as 3rd generation and as 2017 Pros. How do those differ from the latest editions? I’m also looking at Apple’s own refurbished stock.
As a moneysaver I’m beginning to wonder can I just wipe my old Air and start from scratch, it is 16 GB with 1.17GB left ! I have an iPhone and ample cloud storage. I really only use the iPad for personal use and a recent reading of a Which? Online article would suggest a 64 GB would suffice
My reason for thinking the iPad Pro is that if I do buy I want to build in as much future proofing as possible.

As far as model goes, apparently it's an original iPad Air:

My iPhone successfully updated to 13.1.2, however, my iPad Air is stuck at 12.4.2, I’m assuming that is because as the original iPad Air (A1474) it can’t upload the new operation system and doesn’t seem to be supported by Apple.

The 2017 iPad Pros are the older style ones with large bezels around the screen and a home button with fingerprint reader. These come in 12.9" and 10.5" screen sizes. The 3rd Generation ones came out in late 2018 and are the newer ones with thinner bezels and no home button, which come in 12.9" and 11" screen sizes.

I have the 2017 12.9" iPad Pro with 64gb storage, which is plenty of space. I only really max out the storage when I go on holiday and download TV programmes and films to watch offline on the plane and abroad etc. When I get back they get deleted so the space is freed up again.
