I think it's their clack-handed way of saying that you need a minimum of a HDMI 1.4 cable.

There is no such thing as a HDMI 1.4 cable. The HDMI numbers only refer to the HDMI version in devices (TV's, disc players, AV receivers, etc.) They DO NOT refer to cables. HDMI cables can only be standard, high speed, or premium high speed. These can all be had with or without Ethernet.

Yes, I realise that the HDMI version number is not the cable itself but if they are stating it needs HDMI plus ethernet then they are saying that either or both end equipments have a need for HDMI V1. 4. Don't forget that V1. 4 introduced ARC which uses the same pins as HEC. So getting a cable advertised as 1.4 (minimum) compatible means that it is guaranteed that those pins are connected within the cable. There are still a lot of cheap leads around that are only 1.2 with no guarantee that it is fully wired. 1.4 or better are still available cheaply. By stating HDMI over ethernet they are giving the consumer something to look for when they buy a cable.

I am guessing that LG are using the ARC function with their sound bar so need a V1. 4 or better compatible connection.

This is wrong. HDMI cables can only be labelled as I stated earlier. This has no effect on ARC etc. There cannot be any HDMI cables labelled 1.2, 1.4 etc. If they are they are not following the rules of HDMI licensing. All the pins are connected in a cable. ARC uses a pin not previously used before it came out. That pin was still connected in a correctly wired cable.

That's interesting because I have HDMI cables where HPD doesn't work. This indicates that pin 19, one of the pins needed for 1.4 and above is not connected. In other words, it only supports 1.2 and below.
