One time password query.

When I pay with my (debit although I think this may apply to my CC as well) card on line a box comes up and it used to ask for a further pwd for me to enter. Now it just circles and then accepts whatever has been sent to the payment authority. Some time back I had to enter some digits of my pwd. I cant even go to the (Santander) site where I originally put in the pwd to change it.

Does anyone know how all this changed (a few years ago now)? Thanks.

used to be Visa Verification needed a password, but now just whizzes through the process.

Has done this for several years.
It may still ask for your password at certain times. But there are checks made in the background by Visa (certainly) and would assume Mastercard as well. Thar look at various bits of information on device, retailer etc.

Unless you just meant that in the sense of 'once upon a time', what you describe wasn't one-time passwords, but a password per card, that would remain static until or unless you elected to change it.

Genuinely one-time (single-use) passwords are now being introduced both for access to online banking (by March 2020) and online purchasing (by March 2021), although some institutions are further ahead than others so it's already in place for some....
