SCS free carpet fitting help

Hi all,

I was just wondering if someone can help clarify the SCS Free Fitting as per their website which states:

Terms and Conditions: Free Fitting
To qualify for free fitting on your carpet, you must also purchase an appropriate amount of Comfy Lux, Comfy Deluxe, Comfy Extravagant or King Underlay at the same time as any carpet.
The equivalent cost of fitting will be shown as a discounted amount on your total carpet order.
Upon completion of the fitting, you will have to pay your carpet fitter directly this discounted amount.
Room size must be a minimum of 12 m² to qualify for Free Fitting.

We just purchased £2000 worth of carpet using finance but was advised we'll get free fitting on our carpet. They have deducted this on the bill, however advised we still need to pay the carpet fitters £400 cash to them once they finished.

They said the bill would have been £2500 or something but because we're getting free fitting they have deducted but we're still paying the fitters cash, hows that free fitting?

The only thing i can think of is maybe its false marketing and its a deduction on the fitting?? not sure.

Can someone help to explain. Its like getting a hotdog for free if you buy a burger only to realise the burger is nearly double in price.

thanks.

The fitters work independently, they aren't employed by SCS. When they submit their tax returns etc they need to show that they have worked independently and aren't employees or contractors. SCS have not provided free fitting but they have discounted you the money you would have spent on the fitting if you had gone to the fitters off your own initiative.

I see what your getting at, they should really deduct £800 from the price and you pay £400 to the fitters for it to be free fitting.

But then you would be £400 up on the deal? Unless they promised you a £400 discount AND free fitting.

It is confusing but as someone says above if they discount it off the end price then you’ve had free fitting and a discount. The price they give you included the free fitting already

If it was £2000 in store then your cost would have been £2500+ fitting so £3000 but they discount the £500 and you pay £2000 then £500 to fitter

That said, the underlay they use is extortionate and is available online for about £3-5 per sqm they also overcharge for door bars grippers and the actual installation

Get a private quote and pay for fitting yourself and you’ll probably save a lot

We priced it up and decided against it and on the day we got a call to say our slot was 10:30am, he eventually arrived at 8:30pm and finished at 10pm - and ruined our skirting boards. We got compensation from scs but was blood from a stone and wouldn’t use their fitters ever again! As someone says above they’re self employed so scs will try palm you off to them, we were ignored completely for two weeks and only for contacted when we blasted photos all over Twitter Facebook and trustpilot

There is no such thing as free. It's been factored in somewhere, higher priced carpet or underlay

Yes, as above their underlay is £10-12 per sqm and is just rebadged and available online for far less so big savings when doing a lot which £500 fitting suggests (our 6mx6m lounge was £120 up north)

They charge premium prices on each door bar and gripper as well, which really adds up - and also in “delivery” which is unavoidable but if you get your own fitter you can normally pay them a tenner or so to collect it from their warehouse. Our fitting quote was cheaper by some way so we would have made good savings but didn’t realise it was all subcontracted out, you get no benefit from using them.

Did you check the final bill properly?

I've just had sofas and carpet supplied from SCS with free fitting on the carpet. My carpet fitting price came to £96 approx which was deducted off the final price of the carpet. I checked all prices instore (carpet + underlay) they then gave me an extra 10% off the carpet because I bought the sofas at the same time.
It all tallied up on the bill, the final price was minus the fitting cost which I handed to the fitters on completion in cash.

Must admit though they don't half make the billing hard to follow, it's all sent via email with the carpet quote fitting estimation but we got there in the end.

Final shout out for SCS, although we had a glitch with our carpet, it went out of availability between ordering and the fitting date. They provided us with a suitable replacement which cost £7 pm more at no extra cost to us and gave us £150 reduction on the sofas when I had a moan about the price difference when they changed the sale/offer price of it.
