Hi folks,
Hope someone can advise on the best way to proceed. A tradesman recommended by one of the mums at school gave us a quote to build a wardrobe and side gate. We hadn't used him before so we agreed on the wardrobe only and paid £355 (direct to bank account in his name) for materials back in April. To cut a long story short, the work was never done, no materials ever appeared and now we're still chasing him to get our money back. He's repeatedly promised to return the money and apologised (I've got all this in texts and whatsapp messages) but it's all turned out to be lies in the end. How should I proceed? Police? trading standards? All advice will be gratefully received!

Police won't be interested. Trading standards don't talk to consumers any more (they haven't got the staff).
You need to send a Letter Before Action (Google it). Give a reasonable length of time for the money to be repaid, typically 14 days.
Then if nothing happens, launch a small claim. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Do you have his address? Can you track it down if not?Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0
