East Midlands Airport Extortion

Picked up my husband last Thursday evening. Used the Rapid Drop Off area which is £3 for 10 minutes and £1 per minute thereafter. Quite prepared to pay the £3. Husband was there at the side of the road, picked him up and should have been out of the area well within 5 minutes let alone 10 BUT the airport road outside the barrier was completely congested so cars couldn't get out through the barrier.
At the barrier I tried to speak to someone on the intercom to say it was not our fault that we had been there so long but there was no reply. In the end I just paid up by credit card, £10, as it would just have carried on charging us more and we wanted to get home.

I have complained to EMA who just say that they are aware of congestion issues and have added my comments to those already assembled. They have refused my request for a refund of the £7 incurred against my will. Has anyone any idea of any further steps I can take? Can't even complain to my MP as we are in the election period. I really feel I have been mugged and EMA have no incentive to do anything about it as they are coining it in.

Congestion no doubt exacerbated by the recent introduction of VCS's scamera van, panicking everyone into the drop-off zone like frightened sheep into a pen in order to avoid not a £10 charge, but one ten times higher!
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

  • Thanks I'll try the credit card route. I complained by e-mail, backwards and forwards as they deliberately misunderstood the complaint at first.
  • Credit card company was no help. They say payment is acceptance of the charge. They did give me the number of the Citizens Advice Bureau. I talked it through with them and have sent EMA a formal letter of complaint so we'll see what happens.

Have you complained to Trading Standards?

If that fails issue a claim for £7.00 plus a reasonable amount for your time, say £25. I am willing to bet that they would settle rather than go to court.
