I was hopeing the recovery data would kick in but sadley it hasn't and now its asking me to install windows
do I do a clean install or is there anything else I can do before going down that route its a medion desktop pc that was running on window 7 but had a free upgrade to windows 10 any help would be much appreciated cheers

What do you mean it "keeps asking to install Windows"?

What messages are you getting exactly?

Are you sure you are trying to boot to the correct drive? Go into BIOS and check (not sure why it would ask you to install windows though if it was a blank ssd)

When you say you fitted an SSD did you clean install W10 on it or clone the original drive ?
Or is the original drive still in the machine along with the SSD, and the OS is on the original drive?

hi I cloned the new ssd to speed up the booting and for extra space all worked fine for about a fortnight
it seems now that the only way around getting the comp to work is to do a fresh install with out the savings iv started the install and its installing windows 7
How do I get the free upgrade to windows 10
seems very strange looking at the windows 7 screen I just hope I can get the windows 10 on but thank you for all your help

Very confusing....I suggest IF YOU PREVIOUSLY HAD 10 INSTALLED to clean install Windows...10. Download it onto usb here
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
(from...Using the Tool to Create Installation Media...). Why? When you have it on usb you can reinstall it when you want...
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

And if as it sounds you never upgraded. Do the same and once installed activate using your windows 7 key.

Edit to say, since there is a new version every six months keeping an old usb copy like above is silly. Just create anew when you need it. (and regular re-installs are easy and great for many reasons. You can make them hard by keeping stuff in the usual windows folder on the windows partition. I do not so it's no pain)
  • Does it have both disks in it? I too am confused like grumpy, perhaps you need to change the boot order but you are very sparse with your information

if you have the windows 7 licence key?. if not boot from the old disk and extract the key. Here are ways and there is probably a wmic command way too, but these find most ms keys
    https://www.lifewire.com/free-product-key-finder-programs-2625119

create a boot usb with 10 on it: https://www.microsoft.com/EN-US/software-download/windows10

disconnect your old drive (you do not want to overwrite it?) and connect the ssd and boot from above installation usb.

Windows 7 support is coming to an end Jan next year. Make sure you have all the installation software, patches, service packs, knowledge base, and ALL software squirrelled away, as MS will remove everything including their support pages and questions, and app supplies will start not to support windows 7, so no upgrades on 7 either. If something becomes corrupt, you most likely will not be able to download it again.

If you are putting an ssd on win 7, make sure the trim is enabled.
