O/S Daily Thursday 21 November 2019

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Morning all
Hope you don't mind me starting off today.
I know this is very, very early for me but I woke up with a coughing fit, so I decided to get up and make myself a cup of hot honey tea.
Mr Fix It's appointment didn't go as we hoped and his cancer cell levels have jumped to double in the last 6 months :(. Now we have to wait for the consultant to see if he wants to leave it for another 3 months or try something else. To say Mr Fix It is gutted (as am I ) is am understatement.
Anyway today we have been invited by the DGS to watch his swimming competition so we will go this morning as I have a GP appointment this afternoon. I need to call in Tes*c too for some fresh foods in between swimming and surgery.
Dad has been invited to tea but whether he will turn up is anyone's guess. At the moment I don't mind either way.

JackieO please take your time to heal as we need you back here in full fettle. Sending gentle hugs and lots of patience for you.
Hope everyone has a good day and I will pop back later for a catch up.
Hugs to all and take care.
nan xx

    Morning everyone

nanny - thanks for starting us off x

Hugs to those that want/need them, those who are poorly and those who are looking after a poorly person x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

Still dark, cold and frosty start again.

DH and DS1 getting ready for work, I'm showered, dressed and enjoying first cuppa and my porridge whilst on here. DS2 settled and ok.

Dinner last night was roast chicken portions, mash, veg and gravy. Not sure about tonight but will sort it out this morning.

Yesterday work was quite stressful as had several complicated cases. 1 of which will return on Monday, I'm very much hoping to make more progress then.

I'll be heading to town first thing to visit the bank and building society, then home to tackle the "to do " list. I'm hoping today to sort through my food cupboard and get the ingredients for a xmas cake together, I'll purchase anything I haven't got tomorrow when I do the shopping then get it soaking and make the cake next week on my days off. I need to wrap the gifts we bought.

    Keep safe and well x

    Morning All

Thanks for the start nanny, sorry the appointment didn't go well. Enjoy the swimming competition, good luck to DGS!

Great to hear you're getting some good advice dumpling, hope you manage to see the christmas lights.
Keep up with the exercises Gers!
Joining the reserves Specky? I think it will be something you would enjoy and I would be proud of you.
You sound so miserable JackieO, take time to recover and let everyone look after you for a change.

It's cold this morning but doesn't look like there's a frost. It dried up yesterday but was still mighty cold, the wind would cut you in two.

Off for a swim and then work, may call in to see DD and the baby on my way home, cheers me up!

Have a happy Thursday, take care. XX
  • Good morning, and thanks for starting Nanny.
I'm really sorry to read your news about your DH Nanny, what a blow for you both.

There's a hard frost here, and I'm waiting for the heating to come on, meanwhile, I've got a fleece over my knees. I'm starting the day with coffee and ibuprofen as usual.

Speky I was surprised to read your news, but hope all goes well for you.

    Gers, keep on keeping on!

Jackie, Hope things improve for you soon. It's a b****r when you are used to being independent and busy, then you're not - I've hated it when I've been in a similar situation.

I went to the Metrocentre yesterday and bought quite a few things towards Christmas. I am woefully behindhand this year, can't seem to motivate myself, but I'll have to. I'm just not bothered, my mojo has gone off somewhere.!!

Today, I'll airmail Christmas cards to our Dgs's in Oz, and take some books back to the library. Some much needed housework is on the cards as well

Anyway, I'll wish you all a good Thursday, and try and pull myself together.
    Take care folks

    Morning all

Jackieo you sound right p'eed off and I cant blame you, Im afraid its just a case of resting and letting it heal, thank goodness for your lovely family xx

Specky the reserves ?? as in the army ? I would be shocked too if I was your mum, give her some time to let the news sink in it must have been a shock for her xx

Gers rest rest rest !! (and do your exercises !) hope you are soon on the road to recovery xx

Nanny Im so sorry to hear Mr Nannys results were not better sending hugs to you both xx

Off to work today but the weekend is getting closer, only four weeks after this one till we break up for Xmas and then we have a two week break.

Got some mince out for dinner tonight so might do a chilly and rice need to do a wash tonight too.

Have good days all and keep warm xx
  • Morning folks and thanks NAN for the early start. HUGS for you both, As you are aware, I remember only too well the worry of living from one result to another where cancer is concerned. Thinking of you both.

Poor you JACKIE you sound so fed up. Fingers crossed you soon start to pick up.

SPEKY my Bob was in the Reserves (then known as the TA) for many years from the late 70's onwards. I was a bit apprehensive when he first discussed it with me but he absolutely loved it. He made some great friends and saw many places he wouldn't normally have seen when on the training weekends and annual 2 week "camp". His highlight was going to Hong Kong. Of course this is a long time ago so I have no idea what it's like for the Reserves nowadays.

Good day out yesterday with the Golden Girls. We went to Skipton and it wasn't as busy as usual for a market day. We lingered over a lovely lunch (with wine!) in Wildwood. The food is always good there.

I have a busy day ahead. It's middle DGD's confirmation this evening and DD is doing a buffet afterwards. Of course I had to offer to help! So I have a mountain of stuff to make today. And as it's Thursday even a large Bolognese Bake HAS to be on the menu!

Have a good day folks and ((HUGS)) for all in need or want of them. Take care one and all xx

    Morning :hello:

nannywindow I'm sorry Mr Fix It's results weren't good. I hope the consultant has something else for you to try xx

Master tru and his GF completed on their house yesterday :j There was no chain so it should've been quick, but the solicitor was in no rush to do anything so it took a lot longer than it should have. There was a last minute rush, the house insurance they had in place had lapsed so they had to sort that again. But they don't have the stress of moving, they'd been renting the place for over a year :D

I've been pottering in my room, arranging then rearranging when I change my mind, lol. I should stop really, no-one wants FIL's small dining table so it's coming here, I'll use it as a desk. I think I've left enough room for it but I suspect I might need to shift things again :D

The washing machine is on, the chickens are scratching around in their run and Scamp has decided to have a lie-in :D Miss tru has an early start today so she's already left, mr tru will be leaving soon. I'll get no stressy phone calls from master tru about the house buying process. I should be in for a quiet day! I'll get stuck in to a couple of jobs, lately I've been swishing the bathroom but I want to give it a good clean. I need to pull a couple of things out in the hall, the skirting board under the stairs has collected an impressive amount of dust. Not sure after that, I'll see how I feel :D

  • Morning all,

Thank you all for your messages. It's been reassuring to read that you would have reacted the same as my Mum. TA - it appears not to have changed much, with the same 2 week 'camp' mandatory and you make up the time with training at weekends around the world!

As you all know, I enjoy my fitness and sport and I've often questioned if my choice of career, sitting in an office all day, is really going to satisfy me. I felt The Reserves is the perfect way for me to dip my toe in, doing something I'll enjoy, meeting new people, voluntarily, and getting paid to do so. I'm still in the very early stages and exploring the options, so it may not even come to anything. I've another meeting next Tuesday, so will have an update after that.

I worked late last night, till about 7.30. Home to make dinner and have a call with my step-dad, who told me what my mums reaction was once we came off the call. On the whole, she understands why I'm interested but is concerned that if there was a conflict, I would be first in line. Anyway, I was snoozing for 10.

No gym this morning. I've the physio after work today then a light run then football training, so that's enough to keep me going. Oh - and a phone call with my gran, of course. Wish me luck.

nanny - sorry to hear about the results. What awful news. Wishing him all the strength and resilience.
Tru - Good news for DS. Is he closeby to you?
  • Good morning and thank you for starting us off nanny. I'm sorry that your news was not what you had hoped.

JackieO I've no experience of a torn rotator cuff but I do know how frustrating it can be when you want to be mobile and aren't.

It is cold, dull but breezy here though we had a decent drying day yesterday. I'm hoping that the breeze will bring down some of the last leaves today, at present I seem to be spending an awful lot of time raking and piling them up. I've got some that will be ready to spread as leafmould in the spring, they are decaying nicely.

Today I have the usual boring jobs to do, then a telephone consultation with one of the agencies I do work for, right in the middle of the day, I tend to prefer earlier so that I can then get on with stuff but heigh ho.

I might go out later, will depend on the weather really. I have errands but they can be left until tomorrow, then working on Saturday.

Speky I wonder if your mum is worried about your safety, as a mum I think I probably would be though I know that there could be many interesting activities available, opportunities to learn and develop skills

Hope everyone has as good a day as possible

PS I have bought one Christmas present and that's arriving by mail order so really should get my act together
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

    Good morning folks.

So sorry to hear your news Nan, my fingers are crossed for an alternative solution for your OH.

Jackie - I completely understand your frustrations! Not actually being ill but having restricted mobility is difficult. Please look forward to when healing has taken place.

I managed my first solo shower yesterday though I had a seat in there to help. Felt so much better for it.

My lovely friend who was coming yesterday to do some shopping broke down and spent about three hours waiting for recovery. It happened not far from here but at a set of lights on the main road. As it was almost opposite a police station the boys in blue soon came out to push him off into a side road.

DM did too much yesterday and so ended up with an AF episode later in the day. Hopefully she'll cut back today. Mind you she made a pot of lovely veggie soup.

Another quiet day here, :rotfl: Exercise...rest...eat...repeat!

My thoughts to all those struggling. Happy Thursday to everyone.

Morning all from cold, dull mehefinland

just been lurking as nothing much going on.#
New mare has her stiches out tomorrow so that will be fun. She is in lurve with Fairy pony judging by the racket she was making when I let the others out this morning. Problem is going to be Scooby who definitely does not like newmare but is also very attached to Fairy. Ho Hum I see some problems ahead.

Ds is coming home on Saturday for a flying visit. Asked if he could bring the toxic Troll or should he book an hotel!! We have said she can stay providing there is no repeat of her last visit. Got to start building bridges even though we can't stand her, He seems happy enough but that could all be surface stuff. She has just started working at the same place as him - we don't think its a good idea as he potentially gets no break from her . Will see how it pans out

Hugs and spoons to those in need. Get better you poorlies (sp?)
