    Maybe some fine tuning with your account is needed to prevent this happening again. Did you make any big purchases which meant the account had less than it did ?

    Just a small not that your bank doesn’t pay the direct debit as such. The originators bank (eg BTs bank) send a file to your bank with a list of direct debit requests from all of its customers who are calling funds from your bank on that day. Your bank will pay it in bulk and then debit each account individually. Those which it cannot pay due to lack of funds are given time to pay in. There will be an industry cut-off time but your banks may be earlier but it’s not my field so I don’t know what that time would be.
