Mortgage roll number

I had a mortgage with the Halifax from 1988 to 2005 when I moved to my current address. I believe I had PPI on this mortgage. The problem is that I don't have the roll number for it. I have looked everywhere but all my paperwork relating to this has either been thrown away or is at the bottom of a very full loft.

I wrote to the Halifax about claiming the PPI back a couple of years ago and had heard nothing and assumed that I must not have had PPI after all. However, today the Halifax called me about it. They wanted to let me know that they couldn't find anything on their system for me and to see if I had the roll number. I wondered if anyone had any ideas how I may be able to track this number down. Is it likely that my bank (Barclays) who I have been with for 37 years may have the roll number on file, as I would have been paying it by Direct Debit or maybe the solicitor I used. Surely there must be some way to track this number down.
Thanks for any advice I may be given.

Are you sure you had MPPI and are not mistakenly thinking about life assurance (which would have been mandatory in 1988 whereas MPPI in 1988 was not commonplace).

Its possible that your direct debit reference was the same as your roll number but most times it is not. However, banks do retain records of old direct debits for a period of time.

Its unlikely a solicitor would retain records from over 30 years ago. The data protection rules would require them to destroy records like that.
  • Thanks very much for your reply Son of. I'm not 100% sure I had PPI, but apparently it was commonplace for the Halifax to sell PPI in the early days. I will try to contact my bank . It's worth a try,

Selling MPPI doesn't make it wrong to have it.

On what basis do you think it was mis-sold?

Broadly speaking, the misselling of PPI didnt really start until the early 90s. PPI was available prior to that but was not normally missold in the 80s and it was unusual to take it out then as it was a relatively new product at that time.

It is also worth noting that most MPPI complaints fail. And the FOS uphold rate on complaints referred to them on MPPI is only around 10% at this time. You can still buy MPPI today. One of two types of PPI where that is possible.
