Gas bill received nearly a year after leaving property for Gas used almost 3 years ago

I lived in a property for almost 3 years, we moved in November 2015, moved out September 2018.

During the time we lived there we had our gas supplied by EoN, we opted for quarterly billing to reduce the amount we were paying, and we were receiving the bills on time regularly from the point we moved in till March 2017. I have been regularly calling EoN since the bill stopped arriving, I was also in messaging / email contact with their support department too.

After the March 2017 gas bill, the bill just stopped turning up at all, we did not receive another bill until August this year, for over £2000 of Gas usage, dated from when we had first moved in. We had regularly provided all the meter readings (EoN also supplied our electric which we received regular bills for).

I have already paid a final bill for the gas at the property in 2018, so a new one popping up is really stressing me out, neither myself nor EoN can work out what is actually owed.

This was a house share I administrated, so splitting with the people I used to live with is not practical now at all.

I disputed the bill and they reduced it to £1300, however I am led to believe they cannot bill me for energy used more than 12 months ago, which essentially means EoN should not be able to bill me for more than a few months at best, do I have a shot at getting this bill reduced or even cancelled all together?

Id like to add there are massive issues with the EoN website, it has rarely worked at all, I cant actually get the bill off the website, it just takes me to another error page.

    Welcome to the forum.

You need to read up on the back-billing provision.

In essence you cannot be charged for gas used over 12 months ago if you haven't received a bill in that period; or strictly speaking if a bill has not been produced in that period and the company are at fault.

You state that you paid a final bill in 2018; presumably after you moved out in Sep 2018 - otherwise it would not have been a final bill. Thus getting a revised bill for £2000+ received in August 2019 would mean you are not covered by the 12 month back-billing provision.

Sorry Cardew, I read the OP's post a bit differently.

    Moved in Nov. 15
    Moved out Sep 18
Elec billed over the entire period
Gas billing ceased in March 17

Final bill paid in September 2018 - From the OP's data this Final Bill was only for the Electricity, which is backed up by this new bill being dated from the move-in date.

One could ask why the OP never requested a gas bill, but it seems Eon totally lost the plot and fouled up the account of fully registered and well established customer.

The fact that Eon have now reduced a £2000 demand to £1300 shows that they are still floundering to unravel a glitch in the system, but provided that Final Bill was for Electricity only, the OP is entitled to claim back-billing relief for entire value of this Gas Bill

Hello SatoshiNakamoto and welcome to the Forums.

I'm sorry we sent your gas bill so late. I agree with Cardew and dogshome and would certainly ask if the Back-Billing rules apply. These come in where we've failed to bill accurately. Where it's our fault a customer hasn't received an accurate bill, we cannot charge for any unbilled energy used more than 12 months from the point the problem was fixed.

As we've re-billed from the time you moved in (November 15) up until you left (September 18), I suspect there was an issue previously and bills received prior to March 17 might've been wrong too.

Is the new bill based on the readings you gave us at the time or has it been estimated? As dogshome asks, did the final bill you paid in September 18 include any gas or was it for electricity only?

If you haven't already, please raise this as a complaint. A Complaint Manager will investigate and check if Back-Billing applies. I do understand the shock of receiving an unexpected bill. If there is a remaining balance after a resolution has been agreed, the Complaint Manager will be happy to look at a payment arrangement to spread this over a more manageable period.

Sorry again for the delay in sending your gas bill SatoshiNakamoto and that you had difficulties using our website whilst with us.

Your reading of the situation may well be correct; as you say it depends on the 'final bill' in Sept 2018 being for electricity only.

However firstly the thread title is solely about gas billing, and knowing the £2000 bill is for gas, this statement wouldn't indicate to me that the final bill was for electric.:
I have already paid a final bill for the property in 2018, so a new one popping up is really stressing me out,

The £2000 bill is for all gas used 'dated from when we had first moved in.' so presumably the reduction to £1,300 is a credit for the gas bills paid for period Nov 15 to Mar 17.

    We really need more information.

    Edit.

Just seen Malc's post - he will get it sorted if OP follows his advice!
