  • I just thought it was my bad luck :(
  • You are aware that Natwest/RBS are changing their rewards from February 2020 from 2% on all direct debits to a fixed amount per month?
  • Yes, thanks, was aware of that. I understand it's not great news for some customers but I think the new approach should actually work out well for us in terms of the way we plan to use the account. :)

Does anybody know whether Nat West do a soft or hard credit check when you open an account with them? I have no intention of taking an overdraft.

    They will do both.

    They will do both.
Thanks - thought that might be the case. Still worth it for £150, though :)

Argh. After that error that occurred with the first online application, Mrs called NatWest and they said just to re-try online. She did, and this time it went through fine (although the application process - design of online form, questions etc - was slightly different, which seemed a bit strange).

Now NatWest have emailed to say "Your Personal Current Account application has been unsuccessful" and that a letter will be posted with further details. Wondering what on earth the problem is, as Mrs has a good credit record. Wondering if it wasn't such a good idea to accept the £2k overdraft that they said had already been approved as part of the application. Or maybe it's just to do with the error that occurred with the first application attempt. Very frustrating. Suppose we'll just have to wait for the letter to see what it's all about.
  • The letter won't tell you why it was declined.

It will tell you the usual gumpf about checking your credit records etc etc.

Contact NW and ask for a manual review - if you don't need the OD then ask them to not include it in the review.

Yes I was wondering if that might be the best approach - we'll give it a try. Thanks.
