Debit or Credit Card: Is There a Way to Earn Reward Points / Avios from Monthly Mortgage Payments?

My monthly payments are usually DD but I’m looking for a way to earn reward points when paying off my mortgage. I’ve saved up Avios and/or Amex MRs so I’m keen to accumulate more rewards that I can redeem for flights.

Just pay mortgage by direct debit like everybody else and stop obsessing about points.
  • I have been paying by DD for years! Just looking to see if there's a way. Not obsessing either thanks!

Complain to mortgage provider that they are not accepting mastercard debit payments. Given the number of banks either supplying them now, or will be at some point next year.
    Life in the slow lane
  • Would Virgin class the payment as a standard purchase or a cash purchase?
  • You can earn points on anything really - mortgage payments should be pretty easy with a bit of imagination.

That said, you probably will need to do a bit of thinking outside of the public domain as the credit issuers don't really want people earning points on financial transactions.

Nothing wrong with wanting to earn a few extra points! I've arranged it so I get points on pretty much everything, including cash payments and on income tax payments. Might as well get a little bit back if possible!

Disagree with this, given the poor returns on cashback etc. these days, points can give outsized returns if used correctly, and any way to earn them should be explored.

As Urbanite says, there's ways and means, but OP'll need to do some work to discover the best way that works for them (these methods aren't discussed openly, and for good reason, what happens in Fight Club...).

Well, I thought of registering a Curve card and linking it to a Virgin Atlantic Rewards+ CC, but it won't work because my lender (despite accepting debit card payments) does not accept debit Mastercards or any debit cards that start with a '5' (which all cards like Monzo, Revolut and Starling seem to start with!)

Do you have any suggestions? Feel free to PM!

A standard purchase if it's linked to a digital wallet like Curve.

    Not necessarily.

It depends what the merchant classes the payment as.
