Credit reference agency(/ies) used during an MSE Energy Saving Club switch

When going through the process on the site, it looks like an automatic credit check is done via MSE.

Can anyone clarify which credit reference agency(/ies) are used during an MSE Energy Saving Club switch?

  • It's stated within the privacy policy (number 7)

Callcredit, Equifax and Experian look to be used.

Great, in my experience all of them but Experian are complete nightmare to deal with ...

    Thanks anyway

What makes you think the MSE Cheap Energy Club makes any credit enquiries?

Have you found anywhere where you provide MSE permission to do so?

    Are MSE providing you credit?

    I don't think so. ;)

The supplier you make an application to may make a credit check, but not MSE.

From what I recall they (MSE) offer a 'switching service', and if I also remember correctly there was a statement in there somewhere referring to a credit check of some kind

From what I recall they (MSE) do indeed offer a 'switching service', and if I also remember correctly there was no statement in there anywhere referring to a credit check of some kind. Why would there be? They are not offering you any kind of credit.

But happy to be proved wrong.
By signing up to the Cheap Energy Club service you agree that we may regularly contact you by email about energy savings, including letting you know when you can save money, telling you about energy savings news, letting you know about energy deals and when your energy tariff is ending.
Nothing there about agreeing to allow MSE to carry out a credit reference check.
  • The only mention of sharing with credit reference agencies seems to be in sections 7.1.1 and 7.1.2 of the privacy policy, and this sharing seems to be limited to the "Credit Club" and "Eligibility Tools".

Per section 2 of the privacy policy these seem to be separate from the Cheap Energy Club.

I was planning to initiate a switch of my gas provider via the CEC, but I wonder if it is worth sharing anything with a third party for the sake of a, non-guaranteed, cashback of £12.50

A new service is being taken up with a provider. A credit check will be done. Maybe on behalf of the provider by MSE, or the provider directly.

Not always. Depends upon the supplier and the payment type.

I have not been credit checked when switching to my last two suppliers, one that was a quarterly variable DD and one that was a monthly fixed DD in advance.
