Smelly Store Room

Hi, we have a decent size storage space under our stairs which at the moment is a bit of a dumping ground. I want to change it so we can store coats, shoes etc but it has a bit of smell to it so dont want clothes to start smelling of this. At some point in the past, it looks like someone has started to board up but have only done one wall. Can someone advise what we should do to get rid of the smell? (its not really a damp smell just a bit musty)

    Have you emptied it?
    given it a good vacuum?
    left the door open for a day or two?

    What flooring does it have?

    More ventilation perhaps.
  • I've not recently cleaned it out, no (but it didnt seem to make much difference when I last did). Floor is a mix of laminate and concrete.

    I would probably go ahead anyway,
    Empty and give it a good clean out.

    Fix up the walls ready for any hooks shelves etc,
    give it a paint(that will change any smell)
    leave to ventilate for a decent period even consider a fan.

    If still not happy just some shelves and return to a nice looking dumping ground.

    If used for outdoor clothes you may be storing coats and shoes while still damp which won't help longer term.

    Good grief!

    * Empty it
    * Clean it
    * Clean (or get rid of/store elsewhere) the contents
    * Remove the boarding and check behind (for damp, dead mice, old sandwiches etc)

    If it still smells, come back for stage two advice......
