Refused car insurance renewal

Hi all if anyone has any advice I'd be grateful.
As is often the case I'd forgotten my renewal was due soon so I hadn't started shopping around. I've been with Hastings direct for 2 years and 2 cars.
Changed cars for choice not accidents.
I had a no fault bump when somebody went in the back of in the first year. Nothing at all since then and rbeh renewed no issues. We had a new baby on the way so I didn't really get chance to shop around. I just paid in 1 lump sum.
In the last 12 months no accidents no motoring convictions. No speed awareness courses. Nothing.
So you can imagine my surprise when today I get an e mail from them to say none of their underwriters are prepared to insure me so they won't renew my policy.
I have full no claims and am 40 years old.
They would not tell my why simply making excuses about the information supplied was rejected that time but no further reasoning. I appear to have no right of appeal or to.have it wiped off my record.
The 2 agents I spoke to said that I could try and reapply and it may get accepted and that it won't affect me with other companies. That's clearly not true because I presume I'd have to disclose refusal of insurance forever now even though my circumstances have not changes. I'm not aware of any incorrect information but they wouldn't tell me anyway despite asking.
I'm at a loss and very angry. I've been driving since I was 17 and never had any issue like this. I'd understand it if something had happened. But it hasn't. The cheapest price comparison site quite I could get when ticking yes to declined insurance was double that for when ticking no. In addition hardly any insurers would quite me.
Just to stress again. I've done nothing wrong. Not moved. Same job. Same car. Same everything. They wouldn't even give me the courtesy to say what was wrong.
Has this happened to anyone else?

From the information provided it is very difficult to understand why.
Have you made any non-motoring related insurance claims recently?
Have you had any convictions for driving offences, penalty points etc?
Have you made any false statements in regard to this or any other insurance policy?
Has any member of your household done this?
Is there any other factor related to your health or any criminal conviction that you have not mentioned?0 -
Hi Ben. No is the answer to all of them.
The only thing I can think of is I'd forgotten to update my daughter as being here! But she doesn't drive very often being only just 1 !!
I've had nothing else happen. No convictions of any sort that I am aware of. My mother half has been on maternity so hasn't had chance to misbehave.0 -
Is the car a import, some Insurance company`s will not insure them.0

It could be your postcode is a high risk area and the underwriters have decided it no longer fits their risk profile to cover that geographic area. Hit the comparison sites and see who will offer cover.0

Are you sure about how the questions you are quoting are worded? I'm no expert, but I don't think not being willing to quote is the same as being declined insurance. I'd check with your current insurer about the impact it will have.
I'd also try a broker rather than a quote site. That way you can explain yourself accurately, rather than tick a box which may not be an exact match.
Edit:cross-posted with the one above.0 -
This is what the e mail says and when I spoke to them they said none of their underwriters would approve me.
Sorry, we can't renew your policy
We've searched our panel of insurers to find you a renewal price for your car policy, but none of them have been able to offer one. so your policy will end on 18th December 2019. This includes your , breakdown and motor legal expenses.
So does that mean I do NOT have to declare it as declined insurance?0 -

To me it reads that its not against you but the insurers just wont insure you and it isnt what you need to declare.
Other posters may read it differently.0 -
They have not cancelled your insurance, just not offered you a renewal quote. So that's not declarable.
I'm not sure WHY they don't want to renew you, if their is nothing unusual about you, your car, your age or any other factors, but it seems they've made their decision.
Just get quotes in the usual way, no need to declare a "cancellation" and choose another insurer.
Be aware not to try quotes with or without a "cancellation" marker, as this can get flagged as you "testing" the market to see what's cheapest!!
As far as "declinatures" go......I bet everyone has at least one insurer, if they were to page to the bottom on the comparison site quotes, that come up as "no quote" as you don't fit their profile....that doesn't count as having been declined!!How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.98% of current retirement "pot" (as at end April 2025)0 -
Thanks guys. As long as that's not something I need to declare that's a big relief. I didn't want to be branded for life!!
Car isn't an import. It's an electric i3 BMW but it's 3 years old so don't think that would be the issue!0
