Speedfan could be another option to try, see if you are able to control the fans. This doesn't always work on laptops as they are bespoke but it won't hurt to try it. Note that Speedfan will probably tell you the laptop's virtually on fire with its temperature readings but again they're all bespoke so don't worry about that (unless it really is on fire and then it is time to worry!)

Some other alternatives to Speedfan are listed here:

Not necessarily. My top spec Dell XPS 13", that is anything but cheap is quite noisy under load.

I was thinking of splashing out about £750 to £1000 on a new one so will definitely look into the things that you kind folks have mentioned.

Please don't assume that more expensive will guarantee quietness, the above machine and my HP are both over £1000

    Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop. The two I have had before were Sony and Dell and both were perfect but had run their course hence getting a new one. They were both quiet to run and never whirred.

The new one I have is a Lenovo but my gosh, it whirrs like something on drugs.

How would one know if a laptop whirrs or not? Is there something I need to look out for? Any particular brands or types that are quiet to run?

    Thanks.
What model of Lenovo? I'm running on a Lenovo Ideapad 110 and it's silent. Has an AMD chip so don't know if it runs cooler than Intel, but I haven't had any heating problems and never heard a fan running.

Oh I see. Mine is a Lenovo Ideapad 330S. I have no idea what any of that means mind you.

I have one of those. Though I'm not at home for a while, so cannot run a test for you. Also, mine has a Ryzen 5 CPU, so might be different from yours.

Possibly could be because it's a thin laptop, so less space for the air to dissipate.

But you can look here for now; https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-1xx-3xx-5xx-7xx/Lenovo-330s-Ideapad-Constantly-running-fan-low-and-high-speeds/m-p/4201997#M59548

Some found changing the Power Settings solved the issue for them.

Thanks so much for that. I will see if it makes any difference.

Thanks to everyone else for their advice too. I'm not going to go down the route of changing fans because I am not a techie and knowing my luck, I will completely fork it up.

May I ask one last question, what brand or model do you use and which ones tend to be quieter? I do need a new one but I haven't a clue what to go for. I could go into PC World but they just recommend everything and I am none the wise by the end of it.

Thanks again and have a good weekend.

My work one is a hp elite book g3 ? very quiet, never heard the fan, but I am getting older and deafer, plus an open plan office with people moving coming and going. The reason why not to buy this is the screen is 1366 x 768.

Think from g4 up they had a better screen?
