The latest SMMT registration figures show EVs enjoyed a stronger month of sales with BEVs up 6.2% and PHEVs up 31.5% with market shares of 17.6% and 8% respectively. This takes the BEV share YTD up to 16.1% ahead of last years 15.6% at this stage YTD but still a little short of the 2023 total figures of 16.5%. Tesla YTD sales numbers, however, have fallen 12% compared to last year and its share of the overall UK market has fallen by 18% year on year (2.41% down to 1.97%.)

Lots of fascinating statistics on EV sales in this report from NewAutomotive. I have, though, had a little trouble reconciling some of the figures with those issued by the SMMT. For example NewAutomotive quotes market shares of 17.9% (rounded up to 18% in the pie chart) and 7.8% (7.9%in pie chart) respectively for BEVs and PHEVs while SMMT figures are 17.6% and 8%. BEV totals differ significantly  as well: New Automotive 24620 up 5.1% while SMMT quote 26031 up 6.2%. NewAutomotive also quote figures of 46.1% for pure petrol and diesel combined in their pie chart compared to 61.1%quoted by SMMT. This difference is I believe accounted for by SMMT treating MHEVs as petrol or diesel while NewAutomotive count them as hybrids. NewAutomotive also say that BMW are about to overtake Tesla as EV market leader as they came within 87units of them this month but YTD Tesla are still about 20% ahead.

Today's edition of The Bottom Line is about the EV market with particular reference to the threat/opportunity from China.

Article on the steady (but slow) decline of fuel sales for road transport in Norway.

Petrol Sales In Norway Drop 8% Year Over Year

Electric vehicle sales have been growing strong over the past decade, and especially over the past four years or so. One thing that some people have pointed out, though, is that growing EV sales is one thing, actually reducing use of petrol (gasoline and diesel) and cutting carbon emissions. Even if you have 100% EV sales a year, it takes time for older petrol-powered cars to get off the road and stop polluting.

Norway has been, far and away, the leader in terms of EV market share, with even 90%+ of sales being plugin sales in recent years. The majority of vehicles on its roads, though, are still fossil-powered polluters. It just takes time for cars to be retired from the road.

An interesting article on V2H/G. It appears than it may actually extend the life of your (particularly NMC) battery.

This is really an advertisement for Volvo trucks, but as I've mentioned before, they don't really get enough praise/recognition for their rollout, so thought it worth posting as a nice update on what they've done / are doing:

Volvo’s Electric Trucks Reach 80 Million Kilometers in 5 Years

Volvo’s electric trucks have driven more than 80 million kilometers or 2,000 laps around the world since Volvo launched its first electric truck models in 2019. These trucks have reduced CO2 emissions and at the same time improved the working environment for drivers significantly.
Volvo Trucks’ global deliveries of electric trucks increased by 256% to 1,977 trucks in 2023 and the company sees continued interest from customers in 2024. In Europe, more than half of the electric truck customers chose a Volvo during the first quarter of this year — Volvo’s share of the electric truck segment was 56%. In the United States, Volvo represented 44% of all sold electric trucks.

Volvo has so far delivered more than 3,500 electric trucks to customers in 45 countries on six continents. During 2023, Volvo Trucks expanded its electric truck presence as it delivered its first heavy-duty electric trucks to Latin America, with vehicles going to customers in Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay. Volvo also became the first truck maker to deliver battery-electric heavy trucks in Morocco, South Korea, and Malaysia.

Let’s keep this in perspective. 80 milion km sounds like a big number but spread over 3500 electric trucks it is 22857 km or about 14,300 miles per truck. I don’t know on average how many miles an HGV travels per year but the the average long distance HGV driver covers about 125,000 miles per year.  https://www.hgvrecruitmentcentre.co.uk/3-interesting-facts-about-hgv-jobs-and-the-hgv-industry/ Some trucks are used for double shifts so the mileage covered per vehicle could be much higher. This suggests that most BEV trucks are being used for local work - dustbin lorries, local deliveries and that kind of thing, not long distance transport.

BEVs of course are far better at stop start journeys than diesel so it is logical that they will be bought for this type of application. While it is great for the local urban environment it will be a while yet before BEVs make much of a dint in long distance transport emissions. In 2020 HGVs covered 16.2 billion km in the UK alone and that was a year impacted by Covid.

Welcome back JKenH. It's been so quiet without your valuable input. What you have failed to take into account is that they didn't sell all 3500 at the same time. They have been ramping up production; more than half of those trucks were sold last year and probably a good chunk in Q1 this year, so calculating an average mileage per truck isn't really useful. Volvo manufactures a variety of electric trucks with ranges up to 275 miles, so not just bin lorries.
