Keep forgetting about the Netherlands, when looking at the countries with rapid transitions to BEV's. They continue to see strong annual growth in BEV's.

52% Plugin Vehicle Share In The Netherlands! Tesla Model Y #1 Overall!

December was another strong month in the Dutch market for plugin vehicle sales, with 13,795 plugin registrations. This result translated into a brilliant 52% plugin vehicle (PEV) share, with 42% share from just full battery-electric vehicles (BEV).

These impressive results pulled the 2023 plugin share to 44% (31% BEV), a 9% jump over the 35% (23% BEV) in 2022 and the 30% (20% BEV) of 2021, which itself was a positive increase over the previous year’s result of 25% (21% BEV). Furthermore, these numbers are well above the 15% plugin share of 2019 and the 6% share of 2018. So, while these aren’t Tony Seba–like disruptive numbers, it is consistent growth, so one can’t really complain too much. This should allow the Dutch passenger car market to become 100% BEV before the 2035 100% ZEV mandate from the European Union without a sweat.

Electric refuse trucks power homes in vehicle-to-grid trial

Veolia has successfully completed the first phase of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) trials involving its electric refuse trucks.

With their batteries six times larger than those in an average electric car and the fleet usually parked at peak energy consumption times for the National Grid, they could provide the ideal energy source by using V2G technology.

Veolia plans to electrify all of its 1,800 refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) operating in the UK by 2040.

It estimates that the electrification of its fleet will enable the company to provide to the grid around 200 megawatts (MW) of flexible power capacity daily, the equivalent of the evening peak energy demand of more than 150,000 homes.

These refuse facilities being installed by Veolia are really quite innovative.  (I think I may have referenced them somewhere else in these forums previously.)  There has been a lot of investment by Veolia, not just in the vehicles and direct charging costs, but also around the fleet management, fire containment of many large batteries in close proximity, and steps towards local green generation of the electricity in the first place.  Veolia deserve some positive credit.

I know American muscle cars are a tiny market, but they are my first love, and my top pick would be a Dodge Charger from the late 60's, and early 70's. So this news did make me smile, and I hope BEV versions of the big engined US beasties can roll out.

The 2025 Dodge Charger Looks Just Like The Excellent Concept

Here's a nice Friday surprise for any muscle car fans out there wondering if an electric future has anything in for them: the first pre-production photos of the car that's expected to be called the 2025 Dodge Charger have emerged. And it looks extremely close to the excellent Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept that's been making the rounds for a while.

Wireless-charging electric taxi trial provides key learnings for fleets

A trial in Nottingham which saw a fleet of electric and range-extender taxis wirelessly charge while they were waiting for their next fare has helped generate much interest from fleets in the potential of the technology.

The Wireless Charging of Electric Taxis (WiCET) initiative ran for four months, ending last January.

It saw five 11kW induction charging pads installed in the road surface in the taxi rank in Trent Street, outside the central railway station.

Nine vehicles – five LEVC TXs and four Nissan eNV200 Dynamo taxi conversions – were modified so they could charge when the driver, using the guidance of an HMI screen in the cabin, aligned their vehicle over a ground pad.

The system was able to differentiate between cars thus enabling the appropriate drivers to be billed through a web-based app, meaning the drivers had no need to leave their vehicles during charging.

Heard some news about China massively ramping up orders for RORO ships (roll on, roll off) to transport cars around the world for sale.

Found reference to the X (or tweet) that raises this, and also an article with similar info (one shipping company ordering 24):

    X / Tweet
Typically four to six of these ships used to be built worldwide every year. But for 2023 China has ordered sixty(!) car carriers, and another sixty ROROs are to be added in 2024. These are ships that can transport 4,500 to 8,000 cars.

Chinese shipyards working all-out to make vehicle-carrying vessels

Chinese shipyards are busy producing a special type of vessel – known as a ro-ro – to match the nation’s newfound strength in the emerging field of vehicle exports, industry insiders told the Global Times.

China’s vehicle industry reached several milestones in 2023, with record production and sales, according to industry data released last week, paving the way for the country to potentially become the world’s largest car exporter.

Auto exports hit 4.91 million, up a whopping 58 percent year-on-year, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) showed. With such a robust figure, China is expected to have become the world’s biggest car exporter last year.

Yes, I saw an item, recently, where BYD have taken delivery of a new fleet of transporters. Can't remember the exact number, but it was greater than 10.

Only a little one (said the bishop to ........) about outboard motors. As I understand it, ICE motors are noisy, and also very dirty, so any potential shift to leccy motors is nice to see. But what really caught my eye was the company name - Mercury - which I believe is famous for their powerful engines. Let's hope they become equally famous for their motors too.

It is early days, and these are generally for short trip applications, though bigger batts can of course be used, but at a weight/drag penalty.

Mercury Marine Expands Its Avator Electric Outboard Motor Lineup At CES 2024

Mercury Marine is launching an all out attack on the legacy boating propulsion industry with its revolutionary Avator electric outboard motor lineup.

At CES in 2023, Mercury Marine showed off the Avator 7.5e, a 750 watt outboard electric motor designed to be used on smaller vessels. Fast forward 12 months and Mercury Marine is back at CES this year with 5 different Avator electric outboard motors.
