Can't say this worries me too much. Curtailment is hardly a new concept. It'll only be for certain potential peaks when those who aren't aware enough to charge at cheaper, off-peak times all plug in at 6 in the evening. That's why the requirement for smart charging has been introduced. It probably won't affect anyone here, who by and large are aware people.

Already being done in some areas, one of my friends notices this on their car. Its just another one of the things people will 'get used to'.
Its not just cars though, but plans afoot for other things to spread loads. I mentioned before about the possible future ability to regulate individual appliances. This, of course, is still very much pie in the sky but with 5g enabled appliances it will be possible to throttle certain things. So for instance your oven takes 15 mins to warm up instead of 12 etc etc.

I’m intrigued, Joe. Could you elaborate please?

That wasn’t quite the dramatic reveal I was expecting. 2022 is a long way away in EV and RE terms if you consider how the world has changed in the last 2 years. TBH I fell asleep half way through it (I had my iPad playing next to my bed as the wife is away) so missed the Plaid S bit and have had to catch up this morning. I was disappointed by the ‘muddling through’ style of the presentation, having watched the super slick Apple presentation a week earlier. Also the beeping cars reminded me of a children’s cartoon programme.

Looks like investors weren't Impress either. Apparently, their stock market value dropped by $50bn.

I don’t think Elon Musk sets out to impress investors but reading the CleanTechnica blog covering the presentation it went down well with the Teslerati.

This one is going to take me a bit of time to digest, but I’ve said to a few people that this was the day I expected Tesla to change the world, it just wouldn’t realize it… and I think they lived up to that.

This MG could be a game changer in the UK. Real price parity with its rivals.

    https://youtu.be/nsnMGTimG6U

Priced from £24,995 in entry-level Excite trim and £26,995 in range-topping Exclusive form, the 5 is the only electric estate car currently available to buy in Europe, and will play a key role in helping MG to achieve a 50% plug-in sales mix by 2021.

MG claims the 5 can accelerate from zero to 62mph in 7.7sec and reach a top speed of 115mph. Its 52.2kWh water-cooled, lithium ion battery pack offers a WLTP combined range of 214 miles, but MG claims urban drivers can achieve up to 276 miles from a charge.

Sounded like the cybertruck is not coming to Europe. Halving of battery costs, increase in density (range) and reduction in use of supply constrained metals are all a big deal.  As is ability to manufacture at lower cost on a smaller footprint.

However new s is a long way away, after the lucid air and a lot of the battery stuff is still to actually be made to work in a production environment.  No announcement of a UK tera and model 2 factory either...

I did think the 3 pieces makes a car concept is very interesting from a manufacturing perspective, was there a timeline for this?
    I think....

They showed me an app graph of the charging rate on a top line smart charger, over peak periods the charging rate slows and they get maximum charge again later on in the night. We were talking about internet throttling around the same times and they said 'look at this'.
Ive posted before about one of my other mates skipping the smart charger install and the grant and installing a dumb terminal for exactly that sort of reason, they saw this sort of thing coming (work in the industry) so wanted to know their car would be charged when they wanted it charged.

Big brother is here already controlling our homes. Scary stuff - what next? Still it is all for the greater good that we should have our homes controlled remotely. Maybe there will be a points based system to determine who can charge their cars and who can’t.

I have a Zappi 2 charger to take advantage of my solar pv. It does have a ‘smart’ facility to work with TOU tariffs and I believe it communicates through the Myenergi hub. Presumably I could just unplug the Ethernet cable to the hub to disable the ‘smart’ and (remote) control features? Or is there a built in requirement for an internet connection to operate to prevent use as a dumb charger? The car is not at home at the moment to try it.

Actually I am wondering if it does. I have never tried it as still with Bulb. At the  moment I just set the in car timer to charge during E7 period. Anybody know?
