Good freeware .zip .rar programme?

Can anyone recommend one of these?

Just downloaded PkZip trial version to unzip a file but reluctant to pay much (if anything really) for a programme I tend to use less then 3-4 times/year.

I thought WinZip was free with Windows 10 but seems I was confused over this?

Windows can open and create .zip files and has been able to do so for many years. It can't work with other compressed archive formats. I would use 7 Zip for handling all these compressed formats.

Winzip is the best example of an unzipping program but it is not part of Windows. The ability to unzip is part of Windows and has been since the days of Windows XP

7-Zip, as stated, is free and open source. Can open pretty much anything and a bunch of stuff you didn't know could be opened with it

I bet it can't open the can of sardines in my kitchen.

On a more serious note, I use 7-Zip too.

It is free and simple to use.

I still remember using ARJ and JAR32 - the latter having the best compression ratios at the time.

I was expecting them to say Go Back to the Future...   Or back to 2019 when the question was asked and got answered.
