Britain could get seven new nuclear power stations by 2050

Ministers have agreed to set up a development vehicle, Great British Nuclear, to identify sites, cut through red tape to speed up the planning process and bring together private firms to run each site.

As a first step, Boris Johnson is preparing to announce plans to significantly expand the existing commitment to back one new large-scale nuclear power station by 2024

Troubling times in the French electricity market

Difficult times in France with a significant proportion of the nuclear fleet out of service.

This weekend, French grid operator RTE requested that domestic companies, local authorities and households reduce energy consumption on the morning of 4 April between 7am and 10am, warning of a potentially “tense” capacity margin. Consumers are being advised to turn down thermostats if they are out – most French heating is electric rather than gas – switch off devices on standby and reduce the number of lights on in a room. This is as a result of the cold weather across Europe, which has seen demand jump. RTE said electricity consumption may reach 73 GW on Monday morning with production possibly only of 65 GW, requiring around 11 GW of imports to maintain the supply and demand balance.

I noticed on Gridwatch that we were exporting 2GW to France this morning, and it seems we still are. It looks like we've been exporting to France continuously for the past 24h.

UK green economy has failed to grow since 2014, according to official data

The UK’s low-carbon and renewable energy economy has failed to grow since 2014, according to official data showing a fall in the number of green jobs.

In a blow to the government’s pledge to boost net-zero employment opportunities, the Office for National Statistics said its latest figures, covering 2020, showed “no significant change” in turnover and job numbers in the sector compared with six years earlier.

Employment in the low-carbon and renewable energy economy – which includes manufacturing, energy supply and construction – fell by about 28,000 across the UK over the period, to just 207,800. Among the steepest declines were in factories producing energy-efficient products, onshore wind, and solar energy.

If the value of the rouble has dropped as much as news bulletins seem to be claiming,  surely paying for gas in roubles would be a huge cost saving ?

The Rouble has recovered from its huge fall in early March and is now trading against all the major currencies at the same level as it was before the invasion.

But the contract will be based on Euro or $ anyway, won't it?
