UN hails nuclear as the lowest carbon electricity source

Nuclear power generates less carbon dioxide emissions over its lifecycle than any other electricity source, according to a new report

The UNECE study says nuclear ranges from 5.1 to 6.4 grams carbon dioxide equivalent per kWh of generation.

That compares to the wind power source that produces between 7.8 and 21 grams carbon dioxide equivalent per kWh and coal at 753 – 1095g CO2 eq./kWh.

I wonder if this article would get the 'fair and reasoned debate'', so beloved of some posters, if it were posted on the Green, Ethical, Energy issues in the news section.

Post it and see. It's meant to be Green, Ethical, Energy issues in the news, not Wind and PV Energy only issues in the news.

Not me! I wouldn't want to upset the 'owner' that section :)

Anything positive about nuclear in that thread is seen as trolling and awakens the ghosts of Aldermaston and  Greenham Common!

Future of North Sea oil in doubt as Shell pulls the plug on Cambo

On Thursday evening, Shell announced its decision to pull out of the controversial major Cambo North Sea oil and gas field which has come under sustained attack from fossil fuel critics - including Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland.

Attention is turning to what might happen next, both for Cambo and the wider industry.

What’s clear is that any new partner is unlikely to be among majors such as Exxon and BP, all of whom face the same reputational struggles over climate change as Shell.

The North Sea has, however, in recent years attracted growing interest from private or state backed players who may well find the funding and the appetite to take it on, such as China’s CNOOC or Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos, which has been snapping up new fields.

Yes, I think that technically you may be right. I presume as it is near Shetland  it is referred to as in the North Sea.

UK National Grid cancels electricity margin notice for Dec. 3

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's National Grid has cancelled an electricity capacity market notice for 17.30 GMT on Friday, it made earlier in the day, it said on Friday.

Under the capacity market scheme generators are paid to make sure electricity generation is available at times when demand is high.

National Grid's Electricity System Operator earlier said generation capacity was expected at 42,472 megawatts (MW) compared with its expected demand and operating margin of 42,518 (MW).

The cancellation of the request means it now expects to have adequate capacity for the period.

Britain heads for an energy shock

Quite a long article in the Telegraph on balancing electricity supply -too long to copy all the interesting bits but these paragraphs highlight the issue with inter connectors.

A recent cold day on both sides of the Channel spelled problems for National Grid operators in the control room in Warwickshire, tasked with keeping Britain’s lights on.

As demand rose on November 24, cheap nuclear power from France was not being sent to Britain through the cable running under the Channel. Instead, electricity was being sent the other way due to high prices that day in France.

Should green energy be used to make homes electrically heated first?  What would save more money? I want to say the home for most depending a lot on mileage done. If they gave a great price for electric at night and people could just use plug in heaters they would have more money to then help buy a heat pump or EV?

This from 2016 would just put cars ahead on co2, cars are 34%, home heat 29% electric 21%

And EV's are only as clean the grid they are on, So in Germany a model 3 is dirtier than a diesel according to this study.

A recent post on another thread recently referenced a report on the move to 100% renewables which included the quote “ It also estimates that this energy transition would create close to 5 million more permanent jobs than it would lose” and “would reduce energy demand by up to 60%” (thus implying a 60% cut in energy production).

Link below in case any one missed the other post. https://www.pv-magazine.com/2021/12/08/grid-stability-and-100-renewables/

Now forgive me if my view on economics seems a little old fashioned but any industry which needs 5m more permanent workers to produce 60% less can hardly be regarded as an efficient use of labour. Unless we magically expand the workforce we have to divert those 5m workers from other wealth creating activities which will reduce economic output.

Wasn’t the idea of technological progress that we could produce more with less workers rather than less with more workers?

Can any organisation expect to be taken seriously when they resort to headlines like “Electric car hatchet job debunked”? That’s just playing to the baying mob who lap up everything you say because you know they want to hear you say it. It reminds me of the Sun’s “Gotcha” headline from the Falklands war when the Belgrano was sunk killing (iric) around 300 Argentinians.
