Gas bill for neighbours meter

Hi,

I'm in a bizarre situation and nPower are being useless at sorting this out.

I pay my bill with a direct debit. I recently looked at my most recent bill when I was considering moving supplier and I noticed that although the bill is addressed correctly, it says that the bill is for the meter at my neighbour's address. I had previously changed suppliers and I think the error arose when I changed suppliers as previous bills with another company showed correct meter address.

I have informed nPower of this over a month ago and nothing has changed. I'm wondering whether I've been charged more than I should have been at some point? nPower haven't been clear on this.

Also, since it's been well over a year, can I use a back billing argument to tell them that I'm not paying and claim money already paid via direct debit back?

Does anybody know how to get nPower's attention. I've used live chats, called numbers and I'm getting nowhere at solving this.

  • Hi,

have you checked the details of your meter, meter number and meter reading and compared them to what it says on bill?

Go round and have a chat with neighbour, explain the situation and ask to see their meter for details.

If you are paying their bill, whose bill are they paying?

At the moment it seems that the bill has an error, but it could be just a paper error or something more serious.

Check that meter number on the bill is the same as that on your meter, and if that is OK, carry out a check this meter is the one actually supplying you.
Turn off everything in your home, and whilst you watch the meter have a friend with a mobile phone turn the kettle On & Off to your order - The meter should react in exact synch to your commands, if it doesn't it's not yours
  • Hi,

seems it's the gas meter he has problem with, so could just bump up the heating.
  • Thanks for replying.

The meter serial number listed on the bill isn't the same as shown on my gas meter. At the moment they are charging me based on the customer supplied readings, so from month to month these are probably fine, but at some point where the meter switched from my meter to my neighbour's meter there has surely been a problem?

I am interested in anything I can do with regards to Back Billing since it's been over a year?

No, you can't. That's not what the back billing rule is about.

What you should do is raise a formal complaint with them, if you haven't done so already.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
