When we are away I like to catch up on TV, BBC iPlayer lets me record most programs but channels 4 and 5 only let me watch whilst on internet! Is there a simple way to record from them?

You probably don't mean "record", you probably mean "access on demand" which is an entirely different thing. You don't "record" anything, they stream.
Depending on how you're acccessing these service (Sky? Freesat? something else?) you can usually find the bulk of the programmes on All4 or My5 (or Demand5 or whatever they're calling it this week). All4 on Sky is a bit cut down compared to online but the key stuff is there.0 -
That is fine when I am at home but when away with no internet or aerial/satellite I rely on things recorded on my Macbook iPlayer.
But as i said I cannot record Channels 4 and 5.
Any fixes for this?0 -
When you talk about "recording" from iPlayer, you mean downloading a programme so you can watch it off-line?
I don't think any of the other TV catchup sites (All4 etc) allow you to do that - only iPlayer.0 -
What you're referring to is what the BBC terms "downloading" from iPlayer. It's something that the individual providers choose to provide or not.
All4 does appear to offer downloading, though it may not work in the same way as iPlayer does. It's likely to offer a more limited range of content because of rights limitations.
C5 does not offer downloading.0 -
Netflix is now offering download to record,u can save it on your Mac.0

OK so if I subscribe to Netflix will I then be able to "download" things like F1 from channel 4 and watch it later?
plus does Netflix download in real time, can I download more than one program at a time?0 -
It sounds to me like you want to record TV and download the recordings to a laptop/tablet. I have the exact same requirement and there isnt a cheap off the shelf solution as lots of recorders such as humax boxes encrypt recordings so you cannot play them back on anything but the humax box you recorded it on. My solution is to buy an old Humax box, hack it with a custom firmware and then unencrypt recordings as I transfer to my tablet, this is a very techy solution so make sure you are a techy person before considering it.0

If the only reason is to record and watch later at home dont bother, you only need this function when no wifi available to playback.
Iplayer saves the content for a reasonable time.0 -

No, Neflix is nothing to do with C4. They may carry some programmes in a box set style, but certainly not F1, and it's not a catch up service.

That depends on your broadband speed, I guess, but yes, you could download faster than you can watch.
I think what you really want is a set top box, allowing you to record stuff, and use catch up. YouView might be the answer - plug into an aerial and your broadband connection.0 -

Unless you have the ability (and time!) to do what womble12345 suggests, I think you can only download free to view programmes to watch off-line from BBC iPlayer. According to Cornucopia you may also be able to download from All4. (But you may find that things like F1 have rights restrictions that mean they can't be downloaded).
If I were you I'd simply download from iPlayer (and possibly All4) and stream the other free channels on-line.0
