I just looked at the price for using propane, and PasturesNew is right that it isn't enough of a saving over electric to be worth the hassle. Fan heater sounds the best option0

or similar, heat yourself not the garage.
Damn! I shouldn't have clicked on the link. I want one of those now.0 -
Our boiler is in the garages so it didn't cost much ( a few quid ) to add a couple of second hand rads
However we have a snooker table and bar as well as a couple of classic cars so we do need to keep the place warmish but keeping the place dry is much more important
Logs and sticks are also cut in the garage, we certainly don't need heat once we start that job
keep your feet and hands warm is my advice. I work in a very cold and wet envoirment and Im still just wearing a polo shirt in work. However I have thermal gloves on under my rubber gloves and two pairs of socks on, a normal pair and a pair of ski socks0 -
One nice thing about working outside when it's cold, is when you first go back into the warm.
Lovely! Especially when you've been out on a freezing site all day.0 -
Thermal underwear, hat and gloves.0

(eg I have a stack of wood in there taking up all the space that needs cutting/logs that need to be split, I took it in there to do it out of the rain and now I can't face doing it in the cold.)
Get yourself a log splitter - Screwfix do a small 4 tonne jobbie that has handled most of what I've thrown at one (a couple of gnarly lumps needed chain sawing down a lot). Split when wet, and then stack on a pallet somewhere dry. They'll be ready to burn in a couple of years.
As for heating a garage. The only thing I found to be effective and quick was a gas powered space heater. Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -
Ohhhhh - I want one of those vests too ... although they look quite padded? Might be a bit bulky?
Just trying to convince myself I don't NEED one ;-)
Hands and feet - I agree warm feet do make you fell warmer all over (I have a hotwater bottle foot warmer that I love for when I am working at my desk). I also have several hand warmers ...depends what I'm doing but generally not keen on gloves unless they are really thin - they make me feel (even more) clumsy.
I do have to say though as a side effect of a drug I had to take in cold weather I used to get really bad Raynaulds (white fingers and toes -and in my case hands and feet). So for anyone else who suffers with that I was advised and found that heating my body core was more effective than my extremities - made a massive improvement (but not as great as stopping
the medication...).
I wear a thermals all winter...really don't like the cold!!!
I keep looking at log splitters...but then I don't chop that much wood and I need the exercise really.
Haven't tried the fan heater yet - not an excuse - I do need to do my paid work ... but actually quite looking forward to seeing how I get on.0 -
Halogen heater. Great output and instant. Relatively inexpensive to run too.
Lovely light from it too!0 -
Can you still get those "Salamander" heaters? They were like flame throwers!!!
Or have they been banned by H&S?How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0
