So you going to petition for every public space to ban any kind of smells? Good luck with that.

Is this another windup? It has to be.

It isn't any kind of smells, typically it is the strong chemically manufactured air freshener type smells.

  • Don't go into the branch.
    Bank online.
  • Write a letter of complaint to Halifax.

I doubt you'll get anywhere down the disability route, but you could try pointing out to them that it does not necessarily make their branches any more attractive - indeed it may have the opposite effect.

I'd be surprised if you get any satisfactory (or olfactory) response, but who knows - you may be the 100th (insert any number you like) person to complain and they may act.

Change bank. (We have accounts with several banks and Halifax is one of the worst.)

I'd go for the "grumpy face" article in the local newspaper. It might shame them into switching it off.

  • Just take your custom elsewhere and tell them why you're doing so. It's not as if they have a monopoly.
  • I have the same problems with those air fresheners that send out the occasional puffs of fragrance such as in toilets etc. I agree with you, they shouldn't do it, there is no need.

I think in toilets one expects some air freshener (and for good reason) and also most people won't be spending too long in a toilet (although people with some disabilities will, and they may also be asthmatic).

The bank may reply that they provide 'reasonable adjustment' by providing alternative means of accessing services (online etc) but I think it's still worth complaining and pointing out that the smell device makes it not just unpleasant but possibly dangerous for some people. This would include staff as well as customers.
