B&Q flooring

Bought supposedly laminate flooring from B&Q, was installed by professional floor fitters, so it's not fault of installers. Another fitter came over to evaluate what happened to floor as it was fitted in June this year and it's now stained in places and started to chip away. The fitter today said that it's not laminate as inside it's like plastic, although B&Q sold it as hard wearing laminate flooring. We can't find the receipt but have date & time of transaction in bank statement. Can we get our money back without a receipt? Floor is of ridiculous quality, only been layed 5 months ago.

  • Laminate flooring is man-made and plastic-like. Engineered flooring has a real wood top surface and solid wood flooring is exactly that.

After five months’ use you might find it hard to prove it’s inherently faulty. Start by getting someone to look at it and write a report suggesting the cause. If they suggest the flooring is faulty, go to B&Q with it and exercise your consumer rights. If the fault is with fitting or if you’ve laid it in an unsuitable room then it will be down to you to sort out.
  • We should have checked out the reviews, they are so bad! It was a premium floor too.
  • You may have to cut your losses and live with it or rip it up and replace it with something better. How much was it per square metre? Which room have you laid it in?

£23 per sq m, in the office.
  • At that price you can get some decent engineered or solid wood flooring, especially for an office that won’t have liquid exposure. What’s causing it to chip away? Wheeled office chair, perhaps?

    Yes, office chairs on wheels.
  • Check the specifications. It may not be made for that sort of thing. Office chairs get dirt and grit on the wheels and grind it into the flooring, so scratches and chips are inevitable.

Is this your home office? You say chairs (plural). If it’s a business purchase you don’t have consumer rights and it’s down to the B2B contract.

Sounds like you bought a product designed only for (hard wearing) domestic usage.

Did you really expect this flooring to take the daily hammering of office use?

As above, if this is a business you don't have consumer rights and it's B2B.

I would never use an office chair on a bare laminate floor, or real wood for that matter, you'll jest end up ruining it, no matter how good it's rated. Put down a rug or better still get some hard wearing carpet tiles for the area where your chair will be used.

We have laminate flooring throughout downstairs and some upstairs in two bedrooms. The dining room where I am now on computer we have laminate but I use a plastic clear mat (got from Argos 12 years ago) for chair to sit on as it early days I notice marks chair was causing.

This is type of thing we have https://www.amazon.co.uk/etm-Carpet-Polycarbonate-No-Recycling-Material/dp/B071S77HNB/ref=zg_bs_200980031_1
