  • I'm sure they make good pets - you just need to make sure that they are the kind of pet that fits in with your lifestyle. :)

Here are a couple of contacts for breed rescue, and also have a look on Dog Pages for dogs in other rescues.

Research about them on the internet on breeders websites etc. You should always research the breed before buying to be sure of what your getting yourself into.

Like the rescue I foster for, we have a few pedigree dogs coming in from owners who bought them without thinking and couldn't cope. Like one lady who bought a German Shephard without realising how much hair they shed
  • Good point Kimberley. :)

Also, in addition to researching the breed, if you are unable to get one through rescue, research the breeder and ensure you are buying from a reputable, established breeder. For information on what constitutes a responsible breeder, have a look at this page on the Kennel Club website.

  • :o my family has has both miniature and standard dachsies for many years.

They are terrific dogs, full of character and humour. Quite stubborn and can be hard to toilet train! Be warned. Also PLEASE take care of their spines. My mum lost Pheobe aged 4 to calcification of the spine....which was devastating as she was an extremely fit dog. Unfortunately there is no telling if your dachsie will be prone to spine difficulties, but you can reduce the chances by not encouraging them to jump up onto furniture etc ( a good practice anyway).

Do enquire at dachsie breeders as to whether they have !!!!!es for rehoming. My latest one is a standard !!!!! we call Widget who is wonderful!

  • Didn't realise that the website altered the technical name for a female dog!!

So the reply above looks like I have used a swearword, when in fact it was the correct term for a female pooch!!

    Well done MSE!!

Yeah but we all know what you mean :D perhaps next time write it as b.i.t.c.h, so go and edit it now.
  • Hi Sharon,

We had a dachshund for 15 years & she was a wonderfull little dog. Ours did not like walking but others i've known have loved a walk. They have there faults the same as any breed ie their backend tends to go in the later years & they have problems walking, but that can happen with any bread. Another i remember she was not very good with children a bit snappy at times not sure if that was just her though.
