How does Amex cashback work?

Hi all,
Just a quick Q I was hoping I could get some help with!
I've had an Amex platinum everyday cashback card for a year now so should be receiving my cashback this month. This is my first reward card and I can't find anywhere online a good description of how the cashback is actually paid back to me - will I get a positive amount paid onto my card, or is it taken off my outstanding monthly bill, or something else entirely?
Would appreciate any help!
