Cooker fuse box circuit Installation

Hi,
I’ve moved into a property guardianship to save money, I bought a second hand electric cooker as there was cooker switch in kitchen. Very stupidly I didn’t check if this was working, it wasn’t! I’ve gone to fuse board and cooker isn’t on there and there are no spare circuits available. So don’t know if it’s possible to add any or how much it will cost.

I’ve unscrewed cooker switch and there are wires going from it to the cooker plug in box but it’s just not on circuit.

I think we will be here for approx 12 months, so could be that Cost of new circuit is too high so we just get portable plug in oven and hob plates. Annoyingly got a cooker now that I will have lost money on! Arghhh. Thought I’d ask for advice here before I spend any more cash! Also landlord doesn’t care as it’s a property guardianship and we are not tenants

Get a proper electrician in to take a look, I'd be surprised if there isn't a dedicated cooker circuit in the consumer unit given that you have a fused switch in the kitchen.

Post a pic of your consumer unit/fuse box, some older units may have a separate breaker.

To narrow it down, cooker should be on minimum 32A breaker/fuse

I lived for a long while with just a small mini oven & hob. More than enough for two people. Recently replaced the mini oven with a microwave and a full sized oven, but that is only because the household has grown.

Be careful with property guardianships - Your tenure is precarious at best, and you could be told to leave at very short notice. Don't go spending money on electrics or hard wiring in appliances. And certainly do not get anything done without written permission from the landlord and have some arrangement in place for when you move out - You wouldn't want to be clobbered with an inflated bill to revert any changes you had made.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

  • Good advice, what brand of mini hob/oven did you have. Good to know that it was fine, feel panicked by the idea of not having a full cooker!

They've probably lumped it in with the 32A breaker for the kitchen, and I assume there's a spur elsewhere from the switch to connect the cooker into....only real way to check what's going on is with a meter

    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I viewed it by loading all images for that user profile, not the image link
