Jackmydad - thanks for your response, I see what you are saying. It WAS a hard decision - but time and the mess I have made of getting another car (like I said, aother story) have dulled the emotion that I admit I felt at letting the car go. It is now less about the car, and more about feeling badly advised and making a possibly unwise and certainly costly decision based on that advice, from some who I had trusted for quite some time (and who knows my position.....).

Thanks mollycat for your perspective, which obviously comes from a more experienced place than mine - and I think what you do is excellent.

I have taken my car to the same garage or about six years and maybe they are fed up with dealing with me and my efforts to keep my car going to it's last breath. BUT. I did put my trust in the man who runs it and feel that I may have been wrong to..... although he did point out that there will be things coming up - the Cat and he also said that all the coolant had "gone" although there had been no sign of it and no indication on any gauge/warning light or seeing the fluid under the car (I forgot about this before, and he also did a prsssure test and nothing bad happened......?).

Of course, I know next to nothing about cars - obviously - and this has benefitted some one else at a cost to me, I am sure of that.

Thank you very much for your intelligent input, I am not offended at all so no need for apologies :)

    You're welcome! :)

Important thing is not to feel bad about it; what's done is done.

Difficult to say you had been mislead or not from this type of forum "chat", it may well be that your mechanic based his "uneconomical to repair" opinion on more than just that £300 repair bill.

Trust is a funny thing, trust everybody over everything and people eventually take advantage leading to frustration and loss of confidence; mistrust too much and one's life is polluted with misplaced grudge and unfairness.

Take stock; if the mechanic is a long standing aquaintance and has never given you thought to mistrust him, maybe better not to "throw the baby out with the bathwater" and go elsewhere.

Even speak to him again about it; clear the air type of thing but without implying you feel he has been underhand?

Like I say, what's done is done; enjoy your new car! :)

And again mollycat - a great voice of reason and sensible advice, Thank You.

Finding the right balance between absolute trust and deep mistrust is tricky (and I have reasons for struggling with it as well as being slightly over-sensitive.....) and in this case, I am not 100% sure about everything, so I do have to, as they say, "Let it Gooooo" Thank you for your advice!
