Nissan Micra won't jump start

Hi folks,

I wonder if anyone can provide me with some help.

My wife's Nissan Micra had a new battery put in recently as it was on it's way out. It's been fine, but this morning it would not start. She used my car instead and I tried to jump start her's after work. I think the Micra battery went flat as the boot was left open slightly over the weekend and I guess the boot light discharged the battery.

Normally when I have done somthing likle this, i get a jmp start, drive my car for about 30 mins and it's OK.

The problem is that the Micra is not taking it. I have put the cables on correctly (I have checked). I left the donor car connected and running for five and then ten minutes, having it revved up when trying to start the Micra. I am pretty sure tyhe battery is OK (apart from being flat) with no cracks, corrosion and it was not frozen.

This morning it was at least clicking over, but now there's nothing, no lights, central locking or starting.

Has anybody got any advice?

  • Try leaving it on trickle charge over nite if you have a charger. Some cars, specially Saabs wont jump start very well if gone flat.
  • Dont know what type of battery is on your car but i had a gel type on my MX5 this would not jump start after i left my boot open while on holiday!!

I had to buy a new, one gel types can take a week to charge!!

Of all the cars on our fleet the Jap cars tend to knacker the battery when they are fully discharged. No amount of trickle charging seems to get them back to rude health and we find that 95% of the time we install a new battery. It's weird because all the Euro cars get revived and the batteries are fine for years afterwards.

    Thanks everyone for the advice.

I've had three Nissans over the years and they have jump started OK when I had tried.

I'll get the Micra battery charged up with a trickle charger and try again.

SOrry for asking a dumb question, please don't take it personally but...

This morning before connecting any jump leads...
You put the key in the Micra and turn it What happened?
Did the engine turn over but not start?
Did the engine not turn over?
How long did she keep trying?

    Later......
    You connect the jump leads
You turn the micras ignition key
    What happens?
    Did it turn over?

If it does turn over, then it's nothing to do with the battery

If it does not turn over - I'm tempted to say it also is nothing to do with the battery because I can't understand why the dead battery would stop it from turning over, However - to rule out the battery completely - disconnect the +tve terminal on the micra and connect the jump leads to the +tve wire clip of the Micra, put something insulating between the clip and the positive battery terminal (like a bit wood) so they do not touch. Now start the car,

if it does turn over, I'll begrudgingly accept it is the micra battery stopping it from turning over.

If it does not turn over then it is nothing to do with the battery. In this case,
*check you have 13volts at the jump lead terminals
*If possible remove your battery and install it in the micra and try to start it.

Have you checked the voltage of the micra battery?

Why don't you read what I wrote again.

And if you feel so clever when you reply next time, why don't you add your explanation.

This is true but many people have not heard of gel type batteries and how they function, even the AA MAN did not know. The c-tec is a good charger/conditioner to have for gel types ,i have since discovered.

You put the key in the Micra and turn it What happened? It turned over, but did not fire
Did the engine turn over but not start? Yes
Did the engine not turn over? Yes
How long did she keep trying? for a couple of minutes with breaks after 10 seconds or so

    Later......
You connect the jump leads - Yes
You turn the micras ignition key
What happens? Nothing, totally dead, no starter, no turning over
    Did it turn over? No

I haven't tried the extra steps. I took the battery out last nitgh and took it to a local motor factors to charge it up over night. Planning to collect it tonight. the voltage was about 4.9v when we read it last night.

    Thanks again for the help
