Ramsey - Huntingdon area0

I used to work around that area quite a bit, about five years ago. Seemed like a decent enough sort of place. Country side is a bit flat for my liking..0

I am close by having moved from London. I personally would not choose Ramsey if you have young children. I would go for March if you want Small town Village or better and if affordable Ely which is a small city but still has the town community feel.0

I used to work in Huntingdon and currently live in Ely.
Huntingdon is a bit of a hole. Town centre is dead but decent retail parks (like most towns i guess).
Chatteris is really rough and has a lot of problems with drugs and crime (i have family that teaches at the high school and always tell me how bad the drugs problem is)
Sutton, Earith, Haddenham, Wilburton are all brilliant and very family friendly villages (church and village fetes etc)
Ely and the surrounding villages is where most people try get to if wanting affordable in to Cambridge
March has a lot going for it, i worked there for a while and it has loads of shops, a busy high street, independant shops as well. My wife (who was born in these parts) thinks its just a bit rougher than some places.
Where are you trying to get to I suppose? If you are looking at Ramsey as you need to get to Peterborough its a completely different story than if you are trying to get to Cambridge.
Any small villages around these parts are nice to be fair. Im from a big messy city so its all quiet and peaceful down here for me0 -
We are moving from London and just want a “better quality of life” and visited areas around willingham/Swavesey but they are expensive so exploring other areas.
We have visited the areas, just looking for a good secondary school. Commuting would be up north as I’ve heard towards Cambridge isn’t good!
Thank you appreciate any advice!0 -
Dont know your budget but Bottisham Village College is one of the best around here. Its over more towards Newmarket which is great if you want to have to stop every 2 minutes to let a horse cross the road0

Depending on where you actually need to get to and just how villagey you want to be, you could try Werrington village (old Werrington) in Peterborough. All the benefits of living in a town with a village feel. I would avoid new Werrington like the plague.
If it has to be a village in that part of the world, you are spoilt for choice if you are flexible on location. If the end destination is Peterborough, check out Peakirk, Glinton or even Helpston (very nice)
If Cambridge is the aim, listen to other posters but I agree with everything they have said except I don't rate March. Each to their own and good luck.0 -
St Ives and the surrounding villages is another option. Rather more attractive and cheaper then some of the places near Cambridge IMHO.0
-
I’m very open to options, we don’t need Peterborough or Cambridge at all just visited and liked the areas! Happy not to have village as long as has good community!0

Peterborough area is probably considerably cheaper than Cambridge; they don't have a world-famous university to pay for...
Some great pubs and a brilliant chippy in Werrington village.
How about south Lincs? Some lovely houses in Crowland, bit rubbish for shops but easy journey into P'boro. Serious value for money if you look in the right places.
Good hunting.0
