Switching British Gas Tariff via Cheap Energy Club
I am currently on the British Gas Energy Plus Protection Green May 2020 dual fuel tariff (which has £60 exit fees until March next year) but Cheap Energy Club shows me I would be better off with the British Gas Home Energy Plus Protection Dec 2020 tariff.
Can anyone tell me if British Gas would charge the exit fees on the tariff since I believe the new tariff is only available via Cheap Energy Club? Keen to be on the cheapest tariff coming into Winter but not sure worth it if the exit fees would still be payable.

Read your existing contract carefully.0

Hi,
Brit Gas says ' If you move to another tariff with us, the exit fee will not apply.'
As Gerry1 says check your T&Cs.

But are you moving with us (BG) or moving via xxx .0

Yeah I assume that if I phoned up British Gas and asked them to switch me to a different tariff that an exit fee wouldn't apply. I just wondered if anyone had any experience of switching to a tariff that is only available through a broker such as Cheap Energy Club that they themselves would not offer existing customers. I can scour the terms and conditions to find some clause that may or may not reference this particular situation but wondered if anyone had done this and could comment on their experience?
I just want to avoid any potential argument which I can foresee may happen if they process a switch for an existing customer coming from a broker. Sure, I believe I could rely on their standard policy but I don't have a lot of faith in British Gas processing it correctly and not sure whether the time arguing this with them is worth it so keen to find out if anyone else has done it and whether a charge was applied or not.0 -
I am led to understand that the terms of your current tariff indicate that you will not incur early exist fees if you transfer to another BG tariff.
It does not matter how you transfer, but as you are aware, the new BG tariff is not available direct. If you apply via MSE, you will earn cashback too0 -
The cheaper deals available from British Gas are ONLY available through the likes of the Cheap Energy Club. I applied to change tariff from Energy + Protection June 2020 to Energy + Protection Dec 2020 on 7 November. CEC shows 'switch in progress'. I have checked my British Gas account regularly since then and today it now shows my current tariff as Protection + Dec 2020 so the tariff has been changed. As I was only changing tariff and NOT switching away from BG there were no exit fees. Please be aware that, as of now, I have not received any confirmation from British Gas other than tariff showing updated on my account.. Hope this helps.0

I doubt very much that any supplier will pay an introduction fee (half of which becomes your cashback) when a price comparison website has not introduced a new customer, only an existing one !
Fair enough, but MSE CEC has indicated to the OP otherwise
Did you read last weeks MSE email??? :huh:0 -
Well spotted ! I only glance read the article in detail because none of the Big 6 is likely to beat my existing deal with Yorkshire Energy. I'd prefer to be with a challenger company on principle, and I'd never go to British Gas because they deliberately give wrong so-called 'quotations' for E7: they don't ask for day and night readings, only the total usage.
But above all, I won't have a smart meter. By charging refuseniks £hundreds more and giving cashback to existing customers, it shows just how desperate they are to foist smart meters on everyone.0
